Evil Season 2 Star Explains What’s Going On With Sheryl

Christine Lahti, who plays Sheryl on the drama Evil, sheds some light on what’s been going on with her character. Premiering in September 2019, the series follows the forensic psychologist Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) as she works with Catholic assessor David Acosta (Mike Colter) and contractor Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) to investigate cases that could have a supernatural element. But in its second season, Evil moved from the broadcast network CBS to the streaming service Paramount+. In doing so, the show has continued to implement long-term stories to go along with its more procedural elements.

In the case of Kristen, fans have questioned whether she’s actually been possessed by a demon. And for Sheryl, who is Kristen’s mother, her journey has been even more strange and much less simple to pin down. Ever since Sheryl began dating the villainous Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson) in season 1, as Leland attempted to drive a wedge between mother and daughter, Sheryl has gone down a dark path. That has only increased since Leland broke up with Sheryl early on in the series’ second season. She’s been seen possibly praying to creepy dolls and, still possibly, murdering random strangers. In a new interview, Lahti helps clarify some of what Sheryl’s been up to.

Speaking with Bleeding Cool, Lahti praised Evil co-creators Robert and Michelle King. She noted that, after working with the duo on both The Good Wife and its spinoff The Good Fight, she knew the role of Sheryl would ultimately grow beyond a typical supporting part. The actress also revealed how Sheryl really feels about both Kristen and Leland. You can read Lathi’s quote below.

“I think with Leland, I’m doing a lot of manipulation and pretending to go along with his stuff, but I have a greater [ambition]. It’s for a greater good. I have a higher purpose that I can’t reveal, and I’m not even sure too much about it, but I’ve been told that there’s something coming down in terms of a power dynamic between Leland and Cheryl. I feel like people think that I’m under his influence or, you know, his subordinate, but that is the opposite of what I think with Sheryl. With Kristen, I think there’s there is a kind of frayed trust, it is not a completely connected relationship and I’m not sure how I will regain each other’s trust. Right now, there’s a little bit of a distance for sure.

I think that she’s exploring satanic worship. I think she’s one with the dark side, but I think there’s a higher purpose. I think it’s not to hurt. I think it’s to empower. I think that she will always try to protect her grandchildren and her daughter. But she’s really getting a sense of her own power, which she’s never had. That’s both positive and negative. It can be negative in that it is fueled by revenge and maybe it’s not going to be very pretty, but I do know that she’s on a journey and she’s not everything that you think she is at this point.”

Lahti’s character has definitely moved from the background to the foreground in season 2. Over the past several episodes of Evil, Sheryl has come into clearer focus. And in the striking opening scene of episode 11, which is set to the song “Fake Palindromes” by Andrew Bird, Cheryl lures a man back to her place while mouthing some of the song’s haunting lyrics. Those lyrics include the following: “I’m going to drill a tiny hole into your head.”

Sheryl proceeds to do just that, which could indicate that she’s working with Leland in a purely transactional relationship. Or, alternatively, she might be under Leland’s control. In the previous episode, it appeared that Leland had helped do something similar to Sheryl against her will. Given that Evil season 2 will devote an episode to creepy dolls before it concludes, her story may become clearer. So far, the series has mostly excelled in terms of building audiences’ expectations through stellar performances and evocative imagery. All that’s left, as the sophomore installment draws to a close, is to stick the landing.
