F9 Vin Diesel’s Son Took His Young Dom Role Very Seriously

Vin Diesel’s son played a young version of Dom Toretto in F9: The Fast Saga, and the young star apparently took the role very seriously. Diesel, whose birthname is Mark Sinclair, announced the casting of his son Vincent prior to F9’s theatrical release. He appears in one flashback scene in the film, in which Dom recalls working on the famous Toretto family Dodge Charger in the garage with his father and brother.

Since the importance of family is the dominant theme of the Fast and Furious franchise, and since Diesel himself is producer on the films, it makes a lot of sense for him to bring his son into the fold. Dom’s arc in Fast and Furious 9 is about his journey to becoming a proper father – something that he must confront his past in order to do. Diesel has spoken about how Dom’s new status as a father has become his biggest point of relatability to the character, so it’s fun to see him bringing his real son onboard.

In the bonus features for the director’s cut of F9: The Fast Saga, the younger Diesel talks about his guest appearance in the film and says that he plans to continue acting in the future, following in his father’s footsteps. Director Justin Lin shared his own excitement to work with Vincent, who he first met when he was very little. “I’ve known him since a baby, and he was asking me questions, motivations, and he was very serious,” Lin said. “To be able to stand there, with Vin, it was very meaningful.” Clearly, Diesel’s penchant for acting runs in the family.

It’s possible that Diesel’s son could return to reprise his role as the young Dom in Fast and Furious 10. That would require the film to feature some more flashbacks to the Toretto backstory, but that seems well within the realm of possibility. After all, Jakob goes on the run at the end of F9: The Fast Saga, and he and Dom may still have some reconciling left to do after so much time apart.

The dedication to the character that Diesel’s son apparently brought to the young Dom role is a common trait of the Fast and Furious films. While the movies are admittedly pretty silly and ridiculous in their superspy storylines and absurd action sequences, they remain grounded by the strength of their ensemble – a cast who takes their larger-than-life characters seriously enough to make them real, relatable, and compelling to the audience. That’s the mark of the Fast and Furious cast family, and it’s nice to see Vincent Sinclair Diesel become a part of it.
