The FAA said that 6,834 airplanes and 1,828 helicopters in the US registry that operate with radio altimeters are at risk of 5G interference. Radio altimeters are especially critical for automatic landing systems, landing in poor visibility, and terrain level alerts. Radio altimeters have been associated with risks of accidental crashes.

A Risk That Could Lead To Catastrophic Outcomes

Starting January 5, 2022, there will be a massive nationwide rollout of 5G wireless broadband technology in the US. The FAA said they “believe the expansion of 5G and aviation will safely co-exist.” But the United Nations specialized agency for international aviation (ICAO) expressed concern. “Any failures or interruptions of these sensors can lead to incidents with the catastrophic outcome, potentially resulting in multiple fatalities,” ICAO says.

The FAA said that as 5G networks begin to deploy, the list of airports and areas affected will be updated. They called for manufactures and operators to check their various aircraft. The cost of adapting airports and crafts to 5G in the US “remains uncertain” the FAA says. Both commercial and transport airplanes are affected. Aircraft of Boeing, Airbus, Gulfstream, Saab, Lockheed Martin, and several other companies were listed as affected. The FAA warned that interference of radio altimeters “could lead to loss of continued safe flight and landing.”

Radio altimeters are not only used in poor visibility, but they are also used for automatic landing functions, take-off warnings, approach warnings, automated acceleration to prevent stalling, automated brake systems, and terrain and pull-up warnings. Pilot dependency on instruments is another cause of fatal airplane accidents that is on the rise. As aircraft become more advanced pilots rely on automatic systems for safe flights, often losing touch with manual flying operations. The FAA assures they are working with the airline industry, 5G companies, and operators and manufacturers to update 5G risks and guarantee flight safety.
