Facebook App Users Can Listen To Podcasts From Next Week

Facebook’s Podcasts feature is expected to go live next week, offering creators and listeners yet another platform to access their favorite podcasts on. Facebook announced the upcoming feature back in April, explaining that users would soon be able to listen to podcasts directly within the Facebook app. Podcasts is just one of the ways the social media giant is focusing more on audio, along with Live Audio Rooms, Hotline, and Soundbites. The latter of which provides users with a way to record and post audio on their Facebook pages.

Podcast listeners already have plenty of options to choose from, including Apple’s new Podcasts Subscriptions and dedicated apps like Pocket Casts and Overcast. As one of the more popular options for podcast listeners, Spotify has launched new features recently to improve the experience, including timestamp sharing. Not to mention, Spotify has also emerged as the home for popular exclusive content, such as The Joe Rogan Experience. Adding to the mix, Samsung device users now even have a podcast tier available in the Samsung Free App.

Facebook Podcasts will begin rolling out on June 22, according to a report by The Verge. Creators can opt-in to add their podcasts to the podcast Facebook Page, which will automatically generate posts advertising a new episode when it’s uploaded. Creators will apparently also have the option to allow listeners to create and share clips from podcast episodes. To make finding podcasts easy for listeners, it looks like a new “Podcasts” button will be visible on the News Feed and the podcast Facebook Page. According to The Verge, Facebook is offering this feature to a limited number of creators to start with.

The Facebook Advantage

One thing Facebook Podcasts has going for it, is the fact that it will be built right in a podcast’s Facebook Page. People already following the Page won’t have to go anywhere else to listen to a new episode of the podcast, making it far more convenient to access. It also allows podcast creators to push episodes on people who are already following the page, thereby increasing the likelihood that a targeted audience will listen to the latest episodes.

Podcasts are a huge medium, from shows hosted by celebrities like Lord Of The Rings stars Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, to podcasts centered around sports, Harry Potter and even Disney. Due to this increased interest, it’s a smart move for Facebook to try to tap into the market, especially since it also could result in more people using the Facebook app more often. It remains to be seen just how successful Facebook Podcasts will be, but it would be surprising if it doesn’t at least hold its own.
