The Falcon and the Winter Soldier covers the lives of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes post-blip and post-Steve Rogers’ retirement, and each has adopted one of Cap’s roles: Sam is the new Captain America, while Bucky is serving as the new Steve Rogers. With the Infinity Saga now over, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving forward with its highly-anticipated Phase 4, which will not only focus on the movie side of this universe but also on TV/streaming, as the studio has a long list of TV shows lined up.

Kickstarting this new wave of content in the MCU was WandaVision, and now fans are catching up with Sam and Bucky in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Set a couple of months after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the series follows Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) as he decides whether or not to take on the mantle of Captain America as Steve Rogers intended, and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who continues to struggle with his dark past as the Winter Soldier. What none of them was counting on was the government choosing a new Captain America, and it was a high-ranking member of the U.S Army named John Walker (Wyatt Russell).

After catching up with them separately, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now seeing the title characters teaming up to bring down a radial group named Flag-Smashers, led by Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman), and who got their hands on a recreation of the Super Soldier Serum. Although Sam and Bucky have worked together before and formed a good team, their differences are starting to pop up and their methods are not always compatible – but these differences have also drawn comparisons with the two sides of their mutual friend: Steve Rogers and Captain America, with each one taking on one of these roles.

Bucky’s Winter Soldier Battle Mirrors Steve’s Ideology

Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers were childhood friends who joined the army in the 1940s, but their stories were very different. Steve was the subject of the Super Soldier experiment, becoming the Captain America everyone now knows, while Bucky was captured and experimented on. These experiments allowed him to survive after falling down the icy Danube River, but Steve (and everyone else) believed he had died. Bucky was rescued by HYDRA, who continued experimenting on him and turned him into a weapon, giving him a bionic arm (as he lost his left one after the fall) and subjecting him to numerous memory wipes and reprogramming. Bucky became the Winter Soldier, and under HYDRA’s control, he committed numerous crimes and killed a lot of people, including Howard and Maria Stark.

After a long and painful process for him and Steve, after the latter learned what had happened to his friend, Bucky was able to free himself from HYDRA’s control (also in big part thanks to Shuri, as Bucky spent some time in Wakanda recovering), and no longer goes by the name of “Winter Soldier”. However, Bucky continues to struggle with these two sides of him, which is something that Steve also went through. While Bucky is in constant conflict between who he was and what he has become, Steve struggled with the “kid from Brooklyn”/soldier part of him and his superhero side, and both characters had to fight themselves, though in Bucky’s case that fight is darker, more tragic, and in a more psychological level – in short, he’s a dark mirror of what Steve went through.

Bucky Mirrors Steve’s Rule-Bending

Although Steve Rogers was best known for his humanity and morality, he didn’t hesitate in breaking the rules if he felt that was necessary. One of the first examples of this is when he heard that Bucky and company had been captured by HYDRA, and he disobeyed his superior’s orders and went on an apparent suicide mission to rescue them. Of course, one of the most notable examples of this side of Steve Rogers happened in Captain America: Civil War, where he refused to sign the Sokovia Accords and ended up being labeled as a criminal, which he didn’t care about much as he was sure he was doing the right thing.

This rule-bending tendency can now be seen in Bucky, who so far in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been doing things the way he feels should be done, even if they go against his superior’s orders and rules. This can be seen in how he has been “making amends” with those on his list, as he hasn’t exactly followed the three rules his therapist gave him, and most recently in how he decided to help Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) escape from prison without telling Sam about it because he knew they need his help. Just like his best friend Steve, Bucky is willing to do what’s necessary to achieve his goals (which aren’t selfish ones), even if that means bending and breaking many rules.

Sam’s Convictions Make Him More Like Captain America

Sam, on the other hand, is leaning more towards the Captain America side of Steve Rogers. While he could bend rules and earn more enemies in the process, Steve as Captain America was known for his righteousness and courage and he mostly did things by the book, but he would go wherever the world needed him. Sam’s path in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier so far mirrors this side of Captain America, with Sam trying to serve as the voice of reason in his team with Bucky, being the one who isn’t that keen on breaking rules (which is understandable given what happened to Team Captain America at the end of Captain America: Civil War) nor does he rush in as Bucky has been doing, and his honor seems to come first.

Still, Sam isn’t one to leave his team alone, just like Captain America, and while he doesn’t always agree with Bucky’s decisions and methods, he’s still fighting by his side and going where he needs to as that’s what he’s supposed to do. Sam might have given up the Captain America shield, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have what it takes to be this legendary hero, as he already has the same beliefs and ethic as his friend. Bucky, meanwhile, is taking a lot after the human side of his friend rather than his hero persona, and together, Sam and Bucky are keeping Steve Rogers/Captain America’s essence alive in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is something that John Walker won’t be able to do no matter how hard he tries.
