He may have been perceived as Steve Rogers’ sidekick at first, but Bucky Barnes has undergone a huge transformation since his introduction in 2011.

The story of Bucky Barnes is a tragic one. There have been plenty of alternate versions of the character in the comic books, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe iteration of this soldier has had to battle through a number of arcs and phases in his own life.

Everything changed for Bucky after World War II began. His friendship with Steve Rogers was solidified and his life would never be the same, becoming involved in the superhero community – sometimes without any choice at all. He’s still finding his place in the world, but things are certainly going much better for him now than at other major points of conflict during his life have been resolved.

10 Childhood Friendship

Bucky’s fate was set when he first met Steve Rogers. The two became close friends, with Bucky often helping Steve stay out of trouble. They would protect one another and the bond that was forged here would continue to save them more times than can be counted.

They knew each other’s families, celebrated their quirks, and would ultimately become brothers. It was this partnership that really created a legacy of achievement for the pair when they were side by side in battle. It also forged a more heartbreaking series of moments when the two came to blows.

9 World War II

It was Bucky who was first conscripted as part of the war effort. With Steve being held back from service due to his size and weaknesses, Bucky really became an inspiration to him.

In fact, it was likely his own heroic actions that encouraged Rogers to enlist into the specialist program, which aimed to create a super-soldier serum. During this period of time, Bucky picked up a lot of valuable skills which he would use for the rest of his life, to protect and kill people.

8 The Birth Of Captain American And The Howling Commandos

The birth of Captain America meant that a new heroic team was forming. With his right-hand man by his side, Steve led the Howling Commandos, an elite squad of warriors who carried out plenty of successful missions against Hydra and the Nazis.

Fans of the comics will know that WWII was instrumental in setting Bucky and Captain America as the iconic duo, willing to face down all threats as long as they had each other by their side. The symbol of Captain America was really born here, with America coming to respect their new icon.

7 Capture And Death

During the early days of his service, Bucky was actually captured by Arnim Zola and Hydra, before Steve would come to rescue his team. Unbeknownst to S.H.I.E.L.D. these villains began to experiment on James Barnes, planting the DNA for the future Winter Soldier.

After being rescued and completing hundreds of successful operations, Bucky would meet his supposed end. During a hunt for Zola, Bucky was shot down and fell from a speeding train, into the icy valleys below. Steve was devastated by the loss of his closest friend.

6 Birth Of The Winter Soldier

The war came to an end, Steve Rogers sacrificed himself for his country and Bucky began a new process of experimentation after being recovered by Zola. The result of this brainwashing was the formation of The Winter Soldier, a lethal assassin and super-soldier.

With all of Barnes’ traits scrubbed away, The Winter Soldier would become a hired hand and a deadly operative. He carried out a number of destructive missions, including the murder of Tony Stark’s parents. All of these deeds would come to later haunt the man behind the mask.

5 Dangerous Reunion

Years went by, with the world never knowing that Bucky Barnes was behind the legend known as The Winter Soldier. With Hydra pitting him against Captain America for the first time, a dangerous reunion occurred, which would shift Bucky’s trajectory again.

Conflicted by the arrival of a familiar face, Bucky would eventually stand down from his post and go in search of his real identity. He saves his best friend from near death in one of his most notable appearances in the MCU thus far. A new character is essentially born here, neither Bucky nor Winter Soldier.

4 The Civil War

Baron Zemo frames The Winter Soldier for the various crimes he commits, including the destruction of a government building and the murder of King T’Chaka of Wakanda. Bucky goes on the run, but is confronted by Steve, who seeks to help him again.

Deeply involved in the Civil War, Winter Soldier, of course, joins Team Captain America. The revelation of his involvement in the Stark family deaths completely changes the status quo though, with Bucky defending his life against Iron Man. This is perhaps one of the character’s darkest days.

3 Wakanda And The White Wolf

Shunned by the superhero community, hunted, under the control of Zemo, and feeling alone, Bucky finds refuge in Wakanda, where he begins to process his trauma. He starts to find the peace and happiness that he deserves.

He takes on the new identity of The White Wolf, shedding the skin he once wore for something a little more heroic. His peace couldn’t last though as war will always come calling for a soldier and it wasn’t long before he was drawn back into conflict.

2 Thanos Attacks

The attack of Thanos was the kind of threat that White Wolf had never faced before. He joined the Secret Avengers and the Wakandans in their battle against The Black Order and the Titan’s other alien forces. He fought valiantly but to no avail.

Bucky was one of the millions who was snapped from existence. His return would be one of the most triumphant moments in the MCU, with Steve welcoming back his old friend. When the time came though, the Captain America shield could not pass to a known assassin, but instead (to Bucky’s happiness) would be given to Sam Wilson.

1 Redemption

Bucky was well aware that Sam had completely earned that shield, so when Falcon gives up the opportunity to become Captain America, he begins inserting himself into the hero’s life. The two form a bond unlike anything seen between them before.

The battles with the Flag Smashers, the false Captain America (U.S.Agent), Lemar (Battlestar), and the continued involvement of Zemo ultimately allow Bucky to complete his journey, find further peace, and move on with his life. It’s unclear what moniker he now goes by, but for the first time, he can be happy protecting people and perhaps starting a new life of his own.
