Anthony Mackie has been playing Sam Wilson/The Falcon for seven years and has no signs of slowing down after that finale of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. While Sam hasn’t gone through too much of a physical transformation, his suits have, and now more than ever, Falcon has become incredibly powerful, rising above any previous iteration of his character in the movies.
Sam has had brief appearances in other movies such as Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, but the latest Disney+ series really managed to focus on Sam’s character and his initial struggles with taking up the shield. From the running man to the new Captain America, Falcon has certainly evolved.
6 Sam Wilson
When fans first met Mackie’s Sam Wilson back in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he instantly became a fan favorite and someone fans knew they could trust. The first scene with Sam and Steve discussing their military backgrounds gave fans a great introduction to the character, as well as the iconic “on your left” catchphrase.
Sam also became one of the few people Steve could turn to in a time of need, as his kind and compassionate nature helped Steve through his predicaments. Although he wasn’t an Avenger yet, it was easy to see what a great asset he would be for the team.
5 The Falcon
After catching Jasper Sitwell in mid-air when Black Widow kicked him off the roof, fans got their first glimpse at Falcon but as the MCU does best, they made his suit more grounded instead of a super-suit.
Falcon’s wings were a product of the military and resembled little more than a high-tech backpack. Nonetheless, Steve had gained a valuable ally in Sam Wilson who was integral to bringing down the Hydra heli-carriers.
4 An Avenger
At the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans got their first glimpse at a Tony Stark-erized Falcon suit, which went with the more traditional red and grey look that some fans may recognize as it is more in line with the red and white suit from the comics.
Falcon appeared in this suit again in Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War while trying (and failing) to stop Scott Lang from stealing some technology. The suit was essentially identical to his upgraded suit from the end of Avengers 2 but the new Avengers have had time to work together as a fully-fledged team.
3 On The Run
Due to his actions in Captain America: Civil War, Falcon was on the run with Captain America and Black Widow between the events of Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Presumably, Sam trained with the shield during this time as the hero seemed fairly comfortable with it in episode 5 of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier during his training montage.
Sam sports a beard upon his return to the world but still with a worn-out version of his red and grey suit from the previous movies. Not much was seen of Falcon in Avengers: Endgame as he was one of the heroes who was turned to dust with Thanos’ snap. Nonetheless, he returns at the end for the final battle and Steve passes his shield to Sam.
2 Military Man
In the first episode of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Sam is not fighting with the shield as the next Cap, but the exact opposite. He is giving the shield over to the government because he thought it was the right thing to do. Despite not having the shield fans got a great look at another brand new Falcon suit in the first episode as he flies after Batroc in the helicopter chase scene in one of the Falcon’s best MCU scenes.
The new suit was brighter, sporting red and white instead of red and great with more curved wings. Sam and Bucky’s friendship also develops throughout the show as the two started off fairly distant from each other. However, by the end, Sam became someone that Bucky respected and listened to, taking advice from him about what he should do about his friendship with Yori.
1 Captain America
Some fans wondered if Sam was going to take up the shield once more after he had a conversation with Isaiah Bradley, but his experience fighting the Flag Smashers made Sam realize he was now ready to take up the mantle of Captain America. Not only that, Sam did it in a Wakandan, red, white, and blue Vibranium Falcon suit, which was he received thanks to the Dora Milaje.
The new suit was very much a blend of Captain America and Falcon’s suits, with Sam also getting a new Redwing too. A lot of fans were even delighted to see that Eric Darman and the crew made the suit so similar to the comic books. The finale was thoroughly enjoyable and showed that Marvel is still on a role.
