Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is set to release next month, and today Nintendo offered fans their first look at the new expansion attached to this Wii U game’s Switch port. The Bowser’s Fury trailer shows Mario going Super Saiyan after running around an Odyssey-styled open world alongside Bowser Jr., but many viewers quickly grew attached to its menacing, super-powered Bowser.

Throughout the trailer, a large black shell in the distance grows bigger and more menacing until it releases a “gargantuan” Bowser whom the official description on YouTube says has “lost all control.” This black-and-red Bowser drops huge spikes from the sky and breathes fire at Mario as he races to collect a super Cat Bell power-up; a David and Goliath scene that apparently inspired a Japanese Twitter user who goes by gonzarez1938.

The artist uploaded a picture to Twitter just an hour-and-a-half after the trailer went live depicting this Mario and Bowser conflict as a battle from Pokemon Sword and Shield. The idea of getting a power-up that turns characters into huge, unique forms perfectly fits the Gigantamax gimmick in Sword and Shield, and there is an impressive amount of detail in the piece considering its quick turn-around. Commenters have pointed to Easter eggs in the picture, such as Mario’s health being a reference to March 10, commonly considered “Mario Day” in gaming circles.

While artists quickly got to work paying homage to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury following its trailer reveal, Nintendo put out a press release offering fans more details about the upcoming game. Brand-new Cat Mario and Cat Peach Amiibo will offer in-game enhancements, and Nintendo is re-releasing Bowser and Bowser Jr. Amiibo figures at select retailers to coincide with the release based on their larger roles in Bowser’s Fury.

At the same time, multiple new Mario products were announced to coincide with this upcoming title – originally announced as part of the Super Mario 35th Anniversary Direct last year. Nintendo is releasing six new Super Mario 35th Anniversary pins based on different Mario games that My Nintendo users can win by completing certain challenges, and a Mario-themed red-and-blue Switch will launch alongside the 3D World port on February 12.

Many felt the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection featuring Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy on Switch was a somewhat underwhelming anniversary title for the famous plumber, but today’s trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury has garnered seemingly universal intrigue. With artists such as gonzarez1938 already putting out impressive work based on the new expansion, it will be interesting to see how the game is received at launch.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury launches February 12, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
