Fans Interested in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Should Watch Vinland Saga

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla follows in the footsteps of the series’ historical roots, this time transporting players to the age of Vikings. Taking control of a Viking named Eivor, players have to lead their clan to find a new home to settle.

The Vikings are perfect for Assassin’s Creed’s brand of historical intrigue, and Ubisoft even looks to be doubling down on the mythology elements. If Valhalla scratches an itch for fans, there’s another Viking-centric series that deserves their attention, Vinland Saga.

Vinland Saga is an anime and manga set near the start of the 11th century, and it’s steeped in Viking history and culture. There’s a startling amount of similarities between Valhalla and Vinland Saga, which has even resulted in the two series officially crossing over in a short manga chapter. Assassin’s Creed fans excited by the Viking setting should definitely take note.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Vinland Saga Are Both Bloody Viking Epics

Vinland Saga tells the story of Thorfinn, the son of a legendary Viking warrior named Thors, who’s known as the “Troll of Jom.” Although Vinland and Valhalla are set nearly 100 years apart, both series explore the brutality and humanity of the Vikings, while using actual history in interesting ways. Author Makoto Yukimura put a ton of time and care into making the manga historically accurate, both in terms of events and the general look and feel of the world. Similar to Assassin’s Creed, Vinland Saga uses certain historical figures among its fictional cast, like the renowned Viking explorer Leif Erikson, who was actually the first explorer to discover North America. In fact, the name “Vinland” refers to the coastal area of North America that’s regarded as a verdant paradise. This puts it in line with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which has shown a brief glimpse of a trip into North America.

The main character Thorfinn also bears a lot of similarities to an Assassin. He’s quick and agile, oftentimes using stealth to take down enemies with his trademark dagger. Thorfinn is also based on a real person named Thorfinn Karlsefni, who followed in the footsteps of Leif Erikson. Vinland Saga never shies away from violence, and it gets incredibly brutal and bloody very quickly. It’s a bit over-the-top as most action anime are, but still drives home the utter brutality of Viking warriors. It’s also important that the series doesn’t sugarcoat the heinous acts done by both the Vikings and the English at the time, and throughout the series, the cruelty of humans changes Thorfinn.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a story about a Viking settlement fighting for a new home, and at its core, that’s what Vinland Saga is about; the journey to discover a new home in the idealistic Vinland. The anime only covers the prologue arc where Thorfinn is a child, but the manga carries on far beyond that. In later arcs, the series dives more into the politics between various Viking factions and everyday life, on top of battles and action. If Assassin’s Creed Valhalla hits all the right notes for players, Vinland Saga is some of the best Viking fiction out there, within any medium.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launches on November 10 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. It launches on November 12 for PS5.
