J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World hasn’t been on the big screen since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 opened in theaters in summer 2011. However, the magical setting will return this year with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a film that takes place in 1920s New York – several decades before Harry Potter’s battle with You-Know-Who – and tells the untold story of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne): the magizoologist who wrote the eponymous textbook that Harry and his fellow Hogwarts students will one day study (or, if you’re Ron Weasley, not study).
Fantastic Beasts is the first movie written by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling and the fifth film set in the Wizarding World that’s been directed by David Yates (who also helmed the final four Harry Potter movie adaptations). Rowling has already written the script for a sequel and is now developing a third adventure with Mr. Scamander, in keeping with the plans for a Fantastic Beasts movie trilogy that were originally announced by Warner Bros. Pictures a couple years back.
First, however, the initial Fantastic Beasts needs to perform well enough at the box office to justify moving ahead with additional (mis)adventures with Mr. Scamander. Thus, to further ensure that the film is a sizable hit, Fantastic Beasts was featured at WB’s San Diego Comic-Con 2016 panel in Hall H – where, among other things, a new Fantastic Beasts theatrical trailer (which is now online – see above) was unveiled.
The Comic-Con trailer for Fantastic Beasts, much like its predecessors, presents the film as being a playful and decidedly whimsical adventure set the Wizarding World; its tone and ethereal atmosphere area a far cry from the latter Harry Potter films in particular. Some as-yet incomplete visual effects shots aside, Fantastic Beasts is shaping up to be another visually-pleasing romp through the Wizarding World too, with Rowling and Yates guiding the way through a gentler, but fun, wizarding tale than the final chapters in the saga of The Boy Who Lived.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in U.S. theaters on November 18th, 2016.
