Fantastic Four Reed Richards Evil Variant Revealed His Greatest Power

While the Fantastic Four have been fan favorites for decades, leader Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic, tends to do a lot more good with his genius intellect than his stretching powers. But in the alternate Marvel Universe of Earth-1610, otherwise known as the Ultimate Universe, a face-off with the X-Men revealed that even the mainstream Reed may possess a power way, way more impressive than fans ever suspected.

In Ultimate X-Men/Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual #1 written by Aron E. Coleite and Joe Pokaski with art by Dan Panosian and Mark Brooks, alternate future versions of the X-Men go back in time to kill Reed Richards. The first person to try to kill Mister Fantastic is Wolverine, attempting to hack and slash Reed with his adamantium-laced claws. It’s no surprise to fans when that attempt doesn’t work, as Reed’s elastic powers allow him to shift his vital organs to safety and close his wounds instantly. It is when another, ultra powerful character makes an attempt on Richard’s life that fans learn Reed is much more powerful than anyone initially gave him credit for.

Franklin Richards – Reed’s future son and the wielder of the Phoenix Force – attempts to kill Mister Fantastic, but to no avail. The Phoenix is one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse, commanding reality itself and embodying the cosmic force of destruction. It turns out that even a being of pure cosmic energy, one that feeds on suns, cannot kill Reed Richards, since his ‘stretchy’ powers actually mean “His molecular structure can’t be destroyed.” The team returned to kill Reed to prevent a dark future where he discovered a way to permanently remove mutant powers, leading to the rise of a terrible regime led by a corrupted Invisible Woman. This timeline is averted, but later comics would ultimately reveal Reed’s ever-increasing intellect had wiped out his sense of empathy, turning him into a genuinely evil villain.

When the Ultimate Universe is destroyed after colliding with the mainstream Earth-616, Reed Richards finds a way to jump into the prime Marvel timeline, taking on the title of the Maker. A monstrous villain who wiped out his home universe’s version of Asgard, the Maker is a mad scientist whose powers and intellect have nevertheless been depicted as basically the same as the mainstream Mister Fantastic, suggesting that he too may possess a molecular structure immune to powers as extreme as the Phoenix. Whether or not the heroic Reed possesses this power, the Maker certainly does – a very dark fact, given his continuing designs on Earth-616.

While fans may mock Mister Fantastic’s stretching powers – given his genius allows him to invent pretty much anything – it turns out that for his darkest variant, and perhaps for the mainstream Fantastic Four’s leader, these paltry abilities come along with functional immunity to some of the most powerful forces in the Marvel Universe.
