Fantastic Four’s Kate Mara Says She Had A Horrible Experience On Set

Kate Mara says her experience on the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot set was horrendous, laying the blame at the feet of director Josh Trank. Mara, whose sister Rooney (The Social Network, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) is also a Hollywood actor, played the role of Sue Storm in the movie. She was cast fresh off her star-making turn on House of Cards season 1 and appeared in Ridley Scott’s The Martian, one of the best films of 2015. Mara is currently appearing in Hulu’s A Teacher as the titular educator who preys on a young student.

Trank’s Fantastic Four was her only superhero role so far, not a surprise considering the low box office, critical mauling, and controversy surrounding the director. Trank was famously difficult on set, clashing with studio heads, ostensible quitting during post-production, and slamming the movie years later. He even removed the Fantastic Four from his Instagram bio in 2018. That disaster of a film led to Trank getting let go from a Star Wars movie he had been set to direct, with Disney and Lucasfilm worried that his bad on-set reputation might affect production as it did on the superhero movie. Now, Mara has added her voice to the list of those who criticized Trank’s behavior.

Speaking to The Emmys, Mara says she doesn’t have many great memories from the Fantastic Four set, aside from meeting her husband, Jamie Bell. Calling the experience “horrendous,” Mara says Trank singled her out because she was a woman and made her shooting experience terrible. The actress lists Fantastic Four as one of two movies where a male director has targeted her as the only woman on set but doesn’t mention which one the other was. Mara adds that it’s not like she hasn’t clashed with female directors too, but has only been targeted specifically because of her gender by male directors. You can read her full comments below:

I had a horrible experience on Fantastic Four. I’ve never talked about it before. I married one of my costars, so I don’t regret doing that movie at all . But do I wish I had responded differently to certain things? Yes, definitely. The fact of the matter is that my two horrendous experiences with directors were male directors. Have I not gotten along with a female director? Absolutely. And was it not the greatest work experience? Sure. But there was never a time that I felt, “This is happening because I’m a woman.” Where with the male directors, it 100 percent was only happening with me; it was a power dynamic thing. And on both of my bad experiences, the movies were 95 percent men and I was the only woman in the movie.

Mara’s comments are not a surprise. Trank’s on set behavior was widely known and particularly egregious, reportedly almost coming to blows with Milles Teller, who played Reed Richards in Fantastic Four. Mara admits that she regrets not standing up more for herself in the past, but it’s not her fault Trank was disrespectful. No one deserves to be mistreated at work, certainly not due to their gender. Thankfully, she’s now at a place where she feels confident enough to speak out.

Mara’s experience is, sadly, not unique. Many women in Hollywood have spoken out about difficult on-set experiences with male directors in the past, and it’s a disturbing trend that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. It’s a part of the #MeToo movement that naturally doesn’t get as much attention as the sexual assaults perpetrated by Harvey Weinstein. Still, the two issues are intertwined, with the one often leading to the other. By speaking out about her experience on Fantastic Four, Mara has re-ignited the conversation and will hopefully provide a warning to directors that the kind of behavior displayed by Trank and other directors isn’t acceptable.
