The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift is both the best and worst installment of the franchise. It abandoned the franchise’s already established characters for a whole new crew in Japan. There is no grand scheme or criminal mastermind. It’s a simple story about kids who like to race. Much of the plot makes no sense, but those who love the film aren’t bothered. Tokyo Drift is a good time, not a masterpiece.
The film launched the careers of several of the cast members who were new to the film industry. Actors like Sung Kang and Brian Tee had never been in anything so big before. Lucas Black had already found success and continued his path upward from there. Other cast members haven’t seen a relevant role since.
10 NCIS: New Orleans
The actor who played Sean Boswell went from illegal street racer to TV cop. Lucas Black spent three years playing Christopher LaSalle on NCIS: New Orleans. The show is a spinoff from the original NCIS series about special agents who investigate naval crimes. Sean was never forgotten though.
In episode 15 of season 5, LaSalle had to chase a suspect down the spiral slope of a parking garage. He drifted all the way down to the bottom, at which point he said, “Still got it.”
9 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows
Nostalgia from different decades overlapped in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) live-action sequel. The movie elicits childhood memories of the TMNT cartoons and brings in Takashi to play Shredder, the villainous leader of the Foot Clan.
The actual actor’s name is Brian Tee. He didn’t play Shredder in the first movie but was brought in the second time around. As Shredder, Tee kicked up the cartoonish villainy one more notch from his Takashi days. Also, many fans are quick to note that he is absolutely ripped now.
8 Westworld
The guy who played the craziest member of Takashi’s gang, Morimoto, is a buttoned-up professional in Westworld. Leonardo Nam’s new character is Felix Lutz. He’s a gentle engineer that sees the humanity in the androids he maintains at the futuristic Westworld theme park.
The show has garnered a great deal of attention for its existential questions and sci-fi themes. At this point, most people know Leonardo Nam as Felix rather than the murderous man with the blond mullet in Tokyo Drift.
7 Warrior
The writings of Bruce Lee inspired Warrior, a series about Chinese gang wars in 1870s San Francisco. The show has given Jason Tobin his chance to shine. In Tokyo Drift, he played the mechanic that helped Boswell build his car, Earl. The most memorable thing about him was his English accent. His funniest scenes didn’t even make the final cut.
As Young Jun in Warrior, he gets to join in on the action for once. He appears in gunfights alongside the martial arts expert, Ah Sahm.
6 Dynasty
The Dynasty reboot stars a cast full of businesswoman balancing the drama of high-class society and their dysfunctional families. Nathalie Kelley snagged the central role of Cristal Carrington. It seems fitting after she played Neela, one of the few female characters in Tokyo Drift that had her own identity.
In both properties, she stepped into a male-dominated world to carve out her territory, though in Dynasty, she got the job done in heels and designer dresses. Her part with the show lasted just one season, but fans still call for her return years later.
5 CSI: Cyber
Shad Moss or “Bow Wow” hasn’t seen much action in the world of film since his role as Twinkie. Most of his attention has been focused on releasing new music. He did participate in two seasons of CSI: Cyber as Brody Nelson, though. The role came to an end when the entire franchise did.
The character started out as a black hat hacker but was offered redemption as an FBI agent. His new team gave him the nickname “Babyface,” but it’s debatable if this is much of an upgrade from “Twinkie.”
4 Jurassic World & Wolverine
Brian Tee has popped up in some unexpected places. He played the commander of the security squad, Hamada, in Jurassic World. People who have seen the movie and remember it well might not be able to place him. This is because his most memorable scene is when he was swallowed up by a camouflaged dinosaur.
He was also Noburo Mori, the corrupt Minister of Justice, in Wolverine. While his title was important, his role was brief. He gave an excellent performance all the same before being literally thrown out of the movie.
3 Legion
After God declared humans a lost cause, angels were sent to eliminate them all in Legion. Lucas Black played one of the main protagonists, Jeep. He spent the movie trying to secure a future for humanity according to the advice of the angel, Michael. The movie spurred a TV spinoff, but a different actor was cast to play Jeep.
The role wasn’t too far removed from Sean. Black has a penchant for playing characters who hail from his home state of Alabama. Both characters fit that pattern. Jeep was another underdog too, though the stakes were a tad bit higher in Legion.
2 Bullet To The Head
In Bullet to the Head, an evil businessman (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) sent his team of corrupt cops and a hitman (Jason Momoa) to execute another assassin (Sylvester Stallone). But the assassin teamed up with a cop to defeat him.
Sung Kang, the actor who played Han Seoul-Oh, continued the trend of former Tokyo Drift stars playing police officers by taking up this role. The cast of beloved celebrities couldn’t save the film from failure, though, and it made back little more than half of its budget. Kang has seen more success appearing in other Fast and Furious films, which include Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6.
1 How I Met Your Mother & More
Nikki Griffin hasn’t appeared in anything big since Tokyo Drift. This movie still wasn’t the highlight of her career since she had much more screen time in The O.C.
Since Tokyo Drift, she has appeared in The Young And The Restless twice and she played E’s date in Entourage for a single episode. Further guest appearances included How I Met Your Mother and CSI: NY. Griffin now lists herself as a “former actress” and works as a talent manager.
