Fast & Furious 9 director Justin Lin revealed the 1990s sitcom The Golden Girls and a sweeps month programming stunt sparked Fast Five, the series entry that took the franchise in a new direction.

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly posted on Twitter, Lin showed a coffee mug with a drawing of Betty White as Golden Girls character Rose Nylund, saying, “Inspiration for Fast [Five] — I’m not kidding! The Golden Girls are part of the Fast lore, because when I was a kid … I loved Golden Girls.”

Lin continued, “Then they had this thing called ‘Hurricane Saturday Night'” — a crossover of The Golden Girls, Empty Nest and Nurses, which aired Nov. 9, 1991. All three shows were on NBC and set in Miami, “and all three episodes got hit by [a] hurricane,” Lin noted. “And that was the first time when I was like ‘Oh, they all exist in the same universe!’ So that was the inspiration for Fast Five. We brought back all the characters. They all exist in the same universe! So that’s the Golden Girls connection.”

Fast Five made the series less about street racing and more about heists and international intrigue. It also introduced Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs. Sung Kang also was in Fast Five, despite his character Han Lue seemingly being killed in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
