The trailer for Netflix’s Fate: The Winx Saga offers a look at the live-action reimagining of Winx Club. The original animated series began airing in 2004 as an Italian production. After four successful seasons, Nickelodeon owner Viacom became a part of the team, working on seasons 5 through 8. Beginning with four special episodes that aired in 2011, a new voice cast was brought in. Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies, and Keke Palmer are among those who lent their talents to the series. Winx Club has been an international hit, with fans young and old enjoying its world building.

Winx Club centers around Bloom, a fairy warrior, and her adventures with other creatures at Alfea College. In this magic place, the fairies train and work on mastering their powers. Considered the animated series’ popularity, it makes sense the live-action version, Fate: The Winx Saga was announced in 2018. This week, Netflix revealed new details about the show, including a first look trailer.

According to the streamer, Fate: The Winx Saga season 1 will have six episodes and premiere January 22, 2021. Check out the series’ official synopsis and trailer below:

FATE: THE WINX SAGA follows the coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence. From creator Brian Young (THE VAMPIRE DIARIES), FATE: THE WINX SAGA is a live-action reimagining of the Italian cartoon series WINX CLUB by Iginio Straffi.

Based on Fate: The Winx Saga’s description, it sounds like it will maintain the essence of the original show. However, the trailer makes it clear the live-action version is geared toward older kids and adults. It fits right in with Netflix’s other supernatural offerings, such as The Umbrella Academy. The premise is also similar to The CW’s The Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies, which focuses on a boarding school for witches, vampires, werewolves, and other mythical beings. Fate: The Winx Saga’s creator Young is clearly comfortable in that kind of world, which will be an asset to the show.

Considering its name recognition and interesting premise, it’s hard to imagine Fate: The Winx Saga failing. It also helps that many of the animated series’ young fans, at least from its first few seasons, are now old enough to watch the more adult version of the show. That built-in fanbase will help, as will the sense of nostalgia Fate: The Winx Saga will provoke in some. Netflix had a lot of success this year with its modern take on The Baby-Sitters Club. The show stood on its own and was entertaining to those who hadn’t read the books. However, it was plenty loyal to them, making the show rewarding for mega fans as well. If Fate: The Winx Saga takes a similar approach, it’s easy to imagine the live-action update becoming a hit.
