Fate The Winx Saga What Happened To Stellas Friend Ricki

What exactly happened to Stella’s friend Ricki in Fate: The Winx Saga season 1? The ill-fated character doesn’t appear on camera yet she’s repeatedly mentioned by name. To its credit, the Netflix series does explain the basics of Stella’s friendship with Ricki, however, a twist involving Queen Luna complicates the subplot.

In Fate: The Winx Saga season 1, Stella (Hannah van der Westhuysen) is immediately positioned as a privileged student at Alfea College. Upon meeting the series, protagonist, Bloom (Abigail Cowen), the character reveals she has a getaway ring, a family heirloom that will allow her to escape the Otherworld if life gets too difficult. The rest of the fairies at Alfea College are told to “trust the process” by headmistress Farah Dowling (Eve Best), but it seems Stella has a license to flee if need be. Bloom eventually discovers that not only is Stella the actual Princess of Solaria, the daughter of Queen Luna (Kate Fleetwood), but she’s also the ex-girlfriend of a “legacy admission” named Sky (Danny Griffin) who is the son of a legendary fallen soldier named Andreas of Eraklyon. During the opening episodes of Fate: The Winx Saga season 1, Stella is very much framed as a Mean Girl, someone who will challenge Bloom throughout the series.

The third episode of Fate: The Wing Saga season 1, “Heavy Mortal Hopes,” further positions Stella as someone with questionable motivations regarding Ricki. At the annual specialists’ party, Sky implies it doesn’t matter what people think about Stella, who subsequently makes a cryptic statement about her mysterious friend, noting “what people think with Ricki IS what happened.” Sky then acknowledges a conversation between Riven (Freddie Thorp) and Bloom in which it was revealed Stella purposely blinded her former best friend, Ricki. What neither Stella or Sky realize, however, is that they’ve both been manipulated by Queen Luna, who seemingly has information about Ricki’s whereabouts.

The fifth episode of Fate: The Winx Saga season 1 acknowledges what really happened to Ricki. In one conversation, Farah confronts Queen Luna about the lack of available troops and wonders if it’s because she “failed” to “rehabilitate” Stella. As it turns out, Queen Luna manipulated her daughter into believing that she had to prioritize negative emotions, which unsurprisingly had a negative effect on Stella’s frame of mind. The princess’ subsequent lack of control over her powers led to the inadvertent blinding of her best friend, Ricki. Unfortunately, Fate: The Winx Saga season 1 doesn’t fully explore this subplot, perhaps because it will become a more prominent storyline in the second installment.

Online, it’s been suggested by fans (via Reddit) that the mysterious Ricki in Fate: The Winx Saga season 1 could actually be Tecna from the original Winx cartoon. For one, the character was a founding member of the Winx Club, which suggests she’d at least be referenced by name. So, when considering magic is such a key component in the Netflix series, and that characters like Bloom and Stella are continuously learning how to develop their powers, it seems plausible that animated characters such as Tecna and Flora may be part of future installments. Fate: The Winx Saga season 1 ends with Rosalind (Lesley Sharp) forming an alliance with Queen Luna and killing Farah, so future episodes will presumably show Bloom and Stella teaming up for a rebellion at Alfea College, which would allow for more clarity about the Ricki storyline.
