The first clip from Cowboy Bebop shows main characters Spike, Jet, and Faye at a diner discussing bounty hunting, among other things, ahead of the premiere. Cowboy Bebop is a live-action adaptation of the classic anime series of the same name, following bounty hunter Spike Siegel and his friends on various adventures on their spaceship, the Bebop. The series is set to premiere on Netflix on November 19 with ten episodes.

The new series will star John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniella Pineda as Spike, Jet, and Faye respectively. The series is written by Christopher Yost, writer of Thor: Ragnorok, and The Mandalorian. The cast also includes two corgi dogs that play the Bebop’s pet, Ein.

Now, Netflix Geeked has tweeted a two-and-a-half-minute clip featuring the three principal leads. The clip starts with Spike and Jet in a restaurant discussing the functions of a bidet, with Jet misunderstanding the item’s use. They’re then interrupted by Faye, who explains she has just been attacked by eco-terrorists that can turn people into trees but can be easily be tracked by her, allowing the group to make some easy cash through bounty hunting. The series is not a direct remake but an adaptation of the original Cowboy Bebop, which has become a staple of anime as an art form and has inspired countless other projects, most notably Joss Whedon’s Firefly. The new Cowboy Bebop has already received mixed to negative reviews from critics, with its Rotten Tomatoes score currently sitting at 46%. The series has already been called a soulless retread, with many aspects being criticized, such as the writing, editing, and effects, with some praise going to the cast.

The original Cowboy Bebop’s success came from its experimentation with genre, bold themes, and memorable characters. The remake has critics citing it as another Americanized remake of a Japanese property that misunderstands the core ingredients of the initial work, with the American remakes of Death Note, Dark Water, and The Grudge as further examples. American cinema has long had an unfortunate habit of taking foreign properties praised for their uniqueness and turning them into more bland fodder to make money off of. In 1998, Cowboy Bebop left a mark on pop culture, with everything from its style to its soundtrack considered exemplars of the genre, and though the Cowboy Bebop remake is already set up to be underwhelming, perhaps it will encourage new fans to discover the original’s unique charm for themselves.
