Fear The Walking Dead Reminds You There Are Bigger Threats Than Zombies

Fear the Walking Dead once again reminds viewers that the world contains threats that are bigger than the zombies. In Fear the Walking Dead season 6 episode 3, titled “Alaska”, the zombies are as portrayed as more of a secondary concern.

In the episode, the focus shifts to Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Althea (Maggie Grace), who are doing work for Virginia (Colby Minifie) outside the Pioneers’ settlements when they decide to go look for Isabelle (Sydney Lemmon). Eager for Al to reunite with the person she loves, Dwight accompanies her to a building which serves as a drop site for the mysterious CRM organization. While there, the two find people who are infected by the Bubonic plague, the same deadly disease that caused the Black Death, a pandemic that took the lives of 50 million people in the 14th century.

It’s the Bubonic plague and not the zombies that puts Dwight and Al at risk the most in “Alaska”. To get to the roof, Dwight and Al have to carefully avoid infection from rats, who are known to be carriers of the plague. It’s eventually revealed that before they even arrived there, Dwight was infected by the Bubonic plague, but by the end of the episode, they acquire medicine to treat it. Even so, the plague brought death to a lot of people in the building, and could have killed off two of the show’s main characters as well. In the Walking Dead universe, the greatest dangers to the characters are typically the zombies and the humans themselves, but Fear the Walking Dead has proven that there are other, unexpected threats lurking in the world.

In Fear The Walking Dead season 5, Morgan’s group was faced with one of their biggest problems yet when they met Grace (Karen David), and learned about a nuclear power plant that was melting down. During this time, avoiding radiation and the irradiated zombies was their top priority. This, and the bubonic plague from season 6, episode 3, are examples of how Fear the Walking Dead is showing viewers that the apocalypse, being full of unforeseen dangers, imperils the survival of the main characters in a number of different ways.

The plague could be connected to another unique problem that may emerge in Fear the Walking Dead season 6. It was suggested in the episode that the people who intentionally caused the plague to spread may be the same people who spray-painted “The End is the Beginning” on the submarine seen in the series premiere. A group of characters – whose real intentions have yet to be revealed – are after a key, and its been speculated by many that what they’re really after is access to the submarine’s missiles. If so, Fear the Walking Dead could be about to find another way to make the apocalypse even more threatening for Morgan’s group in season 6.
