Fear TWD Why Strand Really Turns So Many Survivors Away From The Tower

After multiple episodes of it being a mystery, Fear The Walking Dead finally revealed why Strand is turning so many survivors away from the Tower. For the majority of season 7, he’s placed a tight grip on control of the Tower. It turned Strand’s empire into becoming a borderline totalitarian regime, as Strand has been particular about who he lets into his establishment, with a majority of the survivors seeking refuge being turned away. Fear the Walking Dead season 7 episode 7, “The Portrait,” revealed why that is the case.

Following Teddy’s nuclear bombing at the end of Fear the Walking Dead season 6, Strand took control of the Tower. With help from Howard, he has built a community that managed to prosper in the nuclear apocalypse. However, he has also adopted ruthless tactics in the pursuit of protecting what he believes to be rightfully his. This includes murdering Will when he tried to convince him to bring Alicia in and having the Larson family killed to prove a point to Dwight and Sherry. As Fear the Walking Dead’s answer to Negan, Strand has fully morphed into a villain after years of trying to be a better man.

While Fear the Walking Dead season 7 kept a tight lid on why Strand refuses to let so many people in, “The Portrait” finally revealed why. While he exudes confidence on the outside, he’s actually deeply insecure about leading a large number of survivors. He fears that if any of the people he lets in do not share the same vision he has, everything he built will fall apart. Experiences in his past, as well as his own pragmatic nature, have played a hand in his insecurity and paranoia. Unfortunately, his attempts to keep his community together have crossed the line into villainy.

Strand’s past experiences likely factor into why he’s afraid of controlling too many people. Through Fear the Walking Dead’s Madison, as well as Morgan, he has seen other groups fail once they become exploited by outsiders (like Virginia and the Vultures) trying to take over. This is why, once he’s in a position of control at Virginia’s establishment, he chooses to run things his own way, even if doing so compromises the moral compass he’s trying to build.

When taking that into account with the Tower, Strand asks different yet specific questions when receiving calls from survivors seeking refuge. It’s part of his strict process of vetting survivors that fit and don’t fit his mold of what constitutes a place in his establishment. In his mind, Strand can’t let people like Morgan find a place in his home because their idealistic worldview jeopardizes the future he’s building in Fear the Walking Dead. In its essence, Strand’s mode for survival is purely Darwinistic, built out of a fear of losing control that not even his closest advisors like Howard could break him out of.

Ultimately, Strand’s paranoia may soon get the better of him. Now that the Stalkers are mobilizing into a serious threat and Alicia is enlisting Morgan’s help to try and get refuge for her people, he’s likely going to have enemies on all fronts. At some point, he’s likely to face a crossroads and either have another change of heart once he sees the error of his ways, or double down on his fears and do something truly unforgivable. With the first half of Fear The Walking Dead season 7 coming to a close, those questions could very well be answered in the next few episodes.
