Female Crew Member Dies After Prop Gun Misfire On Alec Baldwin Movie Set

A female crew member working on Alec Baldwin’s upcoming Western movie, Rust, has passed away after a prop gun misfired on set. Baldwin is producing and starring in Rust, which was announced last year. The movie also stars Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon, Frances Fisher, and Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles.

Rust follows a Western outlaw named Harland Rust (Baldwin) who sets out for Kansas to break his 13-year-old grandson Lucas (Noon) out of prison after he’s sentenced to hang for an accidental murder. The film will see the two fugitives against Ackles’ U.S. Marshall Wood Helm and Fimmel’s Fenton “Preacher” Lang, a bounty-hunter. Rust is currently in production with no release date confirmed.

Now, Deadline reports that the Santa Fe County sheriff’s department has confirmed a 42-year-old female crew member has died following an incident on set involving the misfiring of a prop gun. Another crew member, said to be a male, was hospitalized after the incident and is now receiving emergency care. After the accident, the woman was reportedly flown to the hospital for stomach surgery, but unfortunately did not recover from the injury. Deadline also reports that the sheriff’s department is now actively investigating what was fired from the prop gun and the way in which it was used. A production spokesperson for Rust delivered the following statement after the incident occurred:

There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks. Two crew members have been taken to the hospital and are receiving care. Production has been halted for the time being. The safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority.

Details on the tragic occurrence are still very much developing. Until information is revealed from those who were actually there on set to witness the accident, the situation will remain largely unclear. Sadly, the woman’s death and the man’s serious injury is all that has been confirmed at the time of writing. Hopefully, a full recovery will come for the male crew member who is still receiving care.

While there must be a million other things and emotions at the forefront of the minds of those involved in the movie, the way things unfolded on the set of Rust will hopefully open up a larger conversation about safety on Hollywood movie sets. It could have perhaps been a deeply unfortunate case of miscommunication and/or a failure to properly inspect the prop beforehand. While it sounds like it was likely a true accident, the incident is still under investigation.
