FF7 Remake Intergrade Is Proof A Dirge Of Cerberus Remaster Is Likely

The INTERmission episode of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade focuses on Yuffie, the lovable yet often untrustworthy ninja from Wutai in the original PS1 game. However, several characters from the PS2 spin-off game, Dirge of Cerberus, also appear. These characters, and their connections to FF7 Remake’s overall narrative, are proof that a remaster for Dirge of Cerberus is needed for modern audiences.

Several FF7 characters besides Yuffie show up in the INTERmission DLC episode, but the biggest surprises come from spin-off characters like Weiss and Nero showing up. Originally appearing in Dirge of Cerberus, which allowed fans to control Vincent Valentine after FF7’s main events, both Nero the Sable and Weiss the Immaculate were members of the Deepground, an organization wanting to summon Omega and destroy the planet.

In many ways, the INTERmission episode for FF7 Remake is a prequel to Dirge of Cerberus, although the timeline for FF7 Remake has become a bit difficult to discern. Because of this, even people who played Dirge of Cerberus on PS2 may be confused as to how (and why) Weiss and Nero are showing up in Intergrade. Given that these characters – and the Deepground – may have a bigger presence in FF7 Remake’s sequels, now would be an excellent time for Square Enix to release a remaster of Dirge of Cerberus.

FF7 Remake: Why A Dirge Of Cerberus Remaster Is Needed Before Part 2

From a business standpoint, it makes a lot of sense to release a Dirge of Cerberus remaster before FF7 Remake Part 2 comes out. Episode INTERmission serves as the hook for new players, who may not have purchased a PS2 remaster otherwise. It also helps spread out FF7-related content while fans eagerly await for Remake’s sequel to arrive.

Another factor to consider is accessibility. While the original FF7 is available as a remaster on modern consoles, PC, and even mobile, Dirge of Cerberus isn’t. Players introduced to the Deepground in FF7 Remake Intergrade will likely want to know more about these characters and the story of Dirge of Cerberus, especially since it looks like those events may be more connected when Remake Part 2 arrives. Offering the spin-off title on modern consoles would allow fans to experience the game more conveniently – and also allow them to explore FF7’s deeper universe.

Without a Dirge of Cerberus remaster, important plot details and big reveals may be missed (or at least lose their impact). Given characters like Weiss and Nero’s appearances in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade’s INTERmission DLC, it seems likely a remaster of this PS2 game will happen, ideally before Remake’s follow-up arrives.
