FF7 Remake & Mobile Games Resulted In Huge Sales For Square Enix

Square Enix saw a massive increase in sales throughout most of 2020, with games like FF7 Remake and mobile titles like Dragon Quest Tact helping boost sales by over 33%. There is little doubt that FF7 Remake was one of the most highly-anticipated games of last year, if not the entire PS4 generation.

The release of FF7 Remake was fraught with issues, with the game available early in some regions, due to problems caused at the start of the pandemic. Once the game was released, it received almost universal acclaim from critics, and it gave a lot of people solace during the early days of lockdown. The other huge game published by Square Enix was Marvel’s Avengers, which hasn’t fared quite as well, with the game quickly losing players, thanks to a lack of content at launch. The slow drip-feed of new content has led many people to write it off as a dead game, especially as it has faced severe price cuts since launch.

Square Enix has released its latest financial report, covering April 2020 to December 2020. According to Famitsu, the company has seen a massive 33% increase in sales year-on-year, with FF7 Remake and Marvel’s Avengers credited as being some of the games responsible for this surge. It was also revealed that sales of the expansions of games like Final Fantasy 14 and the Japan-exclusive Dragon Quest 10 were down, but the fact that they’re subscription-based games meant that they still made a profit.

The other successful avenue for Square Enix is mobile gaming, with titles like Dragon Quest Tact, Dragon Quest Walk, and War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius increasing in profit with each year. The one major aspect of Square Enix’s business that is losing money is its cafes and stores, as it operates themed locations in Japan. This is understandable, due to the lockdown, which is affecting the entertainment and leisure industry across all sectors.

The FF7 Remake year was always going to be a huge one for Square Enix, barring the game being critically panned at launch. A lot of people were left with time on their hands over the past year, and games like FF7 Remake and Final Fantasy 14 helped a lot of people get through the loneliness of lockdown. With such massive success this past fiscal year, Square Enix is likely hopeful it can provide the same comfort for customers when it finally launches FF7 Remake’s sequel.
