On December 7, 2021, Square Enix will release Final Fantasy VII Remake: Material Ultimania, a 336-page artbook filled to the brim with previously unseen art, CG art assets, storyboards, song liner notes, and Q&A interviews with Japanese voice actors. Square Enix’s line of Ultimania books has been in circulation for more than two decades, selling millions upon millions of copies the world over.

There are dozens of these companion books on the market, though most are Final Fantasy-related. However, Square Enix has branched out from time to time; the company even published an Ultimania for Resident Evil: Revelations 2 a few years ago. While Square Enix rolled out a Japanese edition of Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Ultimania collection in early 2020, western audiences have patiently awaited word of an English release. Fortunately, said release will arrive later in the year.

The Square Enix Manga and Books website features the first details about the English version of Final Fantasy VII Remake: Material Ultimania. Set to release on December 7, the hardback edition will run fans $39.99, while the digital edition bears a $25.99 price tag. The more than 300-page compendium packs in never-before-seen art, CG character assets, illustrations, enemy designs, and more accompanied by commentary from development staff. In addition, the artbook features song liner notes from the sound team, cutscene storyboards, and Q&A interviews with Japanese voice actors. It’s worth noting that though Square Enix’s website boasts the following cover image for the hardback copy, the art is not official.

Western audiences may have to wait a little longer for the Material Ultimania launch, but at least there’s more Final Fantasy on the way in the coming months. Most notably, Square Enix plans to launch FF7 Remake Intergrade this summer on PlayStation 5. The next-gen upgrade will include a host of new graphical bells and whistles, and fans are especially looking forward to the advent of Yuffie.

PlayStation owners who haven’t given the award-winning remake a try are in luck, too. Final Fantasy 7 Remake counts among the PS Plus freebies for the month of March, alongside Maquette, Farpoint, and Remnant: From the Ashes. There does exist a pretty notable catch, though – those who don’t actually purchase a copy of the remake won’t be able to claim the free Intergrade update on PS5.
