Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata states a desire to see the game released on PC, hinting that he would like to pursue mod support on the platform.

For decades, Final Fantasy has been the quintessential console RPG for gamers all around the world. However, there’s a slim chance that Final Fantasy 15 could be ported to the PC, if director Hajime Tabata gets his way.

When Final Fantasy 15 entered development, Kingdom Hearts lead Tetsuya Nomura was its director, having come up with the concept and the scenario. However, over the course of the game’s troubled development, Tabata became his co-director and eventually took over the role outright.

Tabata expressed his desire to see the game on the PC in this week’s edition of Weekly Famitsu. “I’d like to release the game on PC as a technical attempt,” said the director, according to a report from Gematsu. “I want to show PC users Final Fantasy 15 running on high-end machines, and we personally would like to see it, too.”

However, the idea of porting the game to the PC isn’t just about improving its already impressive visuals. Tabata revealed that he would be interested in seeing how the introduction of user-created content could benefit the Final Fantasy 15 experience.

“I would like to try developing on PC to pursue a unique way of playing with PC-exclusive features like making your own quests and enjoying the world using things like mods,” he explained. It would certainly be interesting to see what the modding community could cook up, given their contributions to other titles.

It remains to be seen whether Final Fantasy 15 will end up on the PC, or whether Tabata is just expressing his own personal wishes. The director previously warned that the game’s success or failure would demonstrate the strength of console gaming in Japan, but a PC port would likely have a greater impact on its fanbase outside of the country.

These days, most major releases that launch across Xbox One and PlayStation 4 also see a PC port, sooner or later. Final Fantasy 15 was already a big seller in North America and Europe, but its performance could be improved even further if the game was available on PC.

We’ll have to wait and see to find out whether Final Fantasy 15 will be ported to PC, and whether mod support will ever come to fruition. However, it certainly seems like Tabata is aware that any major video game franchise, no matter its pedigree, has to move with the times to remain relevant.
