One incredibly talented fan is celebrating Final Fantasy’s 34th anniversary with a funky remix of songs from throughout the popular JRPG franchise’s long and storied history. Ever since the original Final Fantasy was released on the old NES way back in 1987, the series has been home to many iconic and memorable tunes, owning up to the work of legendary composers like Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, and Junya Nakano.

Several of these Final Fantasy themes have even managed to transcend the realm of video game fandom and become staples of pop culture as a whole, as evidenced by this summer’s 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games featuring tunes from Final Fantasy among many other famous video game franchises in its opening ceremony. Sure enough, pretty much any gamer will recognize the brief but triumphant “Victory Fanfare” that plays at the end of a battle in most Final Fantasy installments, and classic moments like Sephiroth standing menacingly before a burning Nibelheim in Final Fantasy VII or Tidus and Yuna’s romantic moonlit swim in Final Fantasy X arguably wouldn’t have the same emotional resonance without the music of “One-Winged Angel” or “Suteki Da Ne.”

Yesterday, fan composer Alex Moukala posted a video of himself playing an impressive medley of iconic tracks from all across the Final Fantasy series on Final Fantasy under his handle of silentedge92. Among the songs featured in this funk-infused guitar performance are the “Victory Fanfare,” Sephiroth’s ominous “One-Winged Angel” theme from Final Fantasy VII, “To Zanarkand x Tidus’ Laugh” from Final Fantasy X, and “Footfalls (The Song Of Hope)” from Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker. Moukala adds a few humorous quirks to his clip, such as a Vivi plushie during the “Victory Fanfare” and Tidus’s infamous fake laugh during his theme from Final Fantasy X.

The past few years have been an exciting time for Final Fantasy fans, as Square Enix finally released the long-awaited first chapter of Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and Final Fantasy XIV saw a surge of new players this summer – so much that Square was forced to temporarily suspend sales due to server overload. Things won’t be slowing down for Final Fantasy anytime soon either: Final Fantasy VII Remake’s second installment is still on the horizon, and rumors have suggested that Square Enix could begin work on a Final Fantasy X-3 once the FFVII Remake series is finished.

The iconic music from Final Fantasy is a strong part of what made the series one of the most successful JRPG franchises of all time, as evidenced by fans making imaginative tributes to songs from installments like Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X a good three decades later. Alex Moukala’s jazzy Final Fantasy medley is one such tribute, remixing classic tunes from all across Square Enix’s flagship series with a funky spirit that celebrates just how versatile and diverse Final Fantasy has been in its various worlds over the years.
