After one of the longest development periods for any game ever, Final Fantasy XV was finally released in 2016 for home consoles. Aranea initially started out as a mercenary for the Niflheim Empire, and consistently impressed officials with her airborne combat skills.

So, the Empire decided to bump up her position into a rather permanent one, leading to her becoming the Commodore of the Third Army Corps 87th Airborne Unit — a title that is quite a mouthful indeed.

9 She’s Known Biggs & Wedge Since Their Childhood Days

As a mercenary, Aranea was paired off with a multitude of officers to aid her in her missions, including the classic duo of Biggs and Wedge that have been a staple of Final Fantasy since time eternal.

As an added bonus to Aranea’s background, it’s revealed in the game’s lore that Aranea actually knew Biggs and Wedge from the time when all three of them were teenagers, adding more weight to their bond as a result.

8 She Fits The Dragoon Class In Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV is supposed to be the entry point for newcomers to the franchise — a statement that is quite debatable — so it can be quite perplexing for said newcomers to understand what a Dragoon even is, let alone their significance in the Final Fantasy series.

However, long-time fans need no introduction to this legendary class, which uses spears and the Jump ability to differentiate itself from the rest of the classes in this title. Given the fact that Aranea uses a lance and is a master of airborne combat — along with her Highwing surname — it doesn’t take an expert to realize that she’s meant to exemplify this class in Final Fantasy XV.

7 She Uses A Magitek Lance, Called The Stoss Spear

Speaking of her lance, one must mention that Aranea’s power in combat is certainly enhanced by the Magitek lance that she wields, which adds substantial power to her attacks.

This lance is officially known as the Stoss Spear, and has become synonymous with Aranea due to its iconic debut in Final Fantasy XV.

6 Her Suit Of Armor Is Called The Dragon Mail

The suit of armor that Aranea wears throughout the game is also quite iconic in its own right and is meant to add further weight to the fact that she represents the Dragoon class.

This can be seen in the fact that her armor is officially known as the Dragon Mail, which is as on-the-nose of a hint as can be.

5 Her Cape Is Supposed To Mimic A Dragon’s Wings

If the armor’s name wasn’t enough to hammer in the point that Aranea is a Dragoon, then her cape is the perfect icing on the cake.

Aranea sports a long white cape with a red symbol, which flutters around as she engages in airborne combat. This makes it look like she has the wings of a dragon, which is very much intentional.

4 As A Child, Aranea Survived A Daemon Attack On Her Village

Aranea’s backstory is fleshed out in Final Fantasy XV -The Dawn of the Future-, which talks about her turbulent past as a child when a bunch of Daemons attacked her village.

Aranea, ferocious as always, wanted to fight against this Daemon invasion but was forbidden by the elders of the village from doing the same. It was a definitive moment in her life that shaped her motivations to become a warrior in the first place.

During Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto, Aranea plays a pretty major role in getting Prompto out of the spiral his mind had fallen into.

Players might find her behavior with Prompto a bit too rough, but the fact of the matter is that her aggressive demeanor is a way to help Prompto toughen up and not be too frazzled by this turn of events.
