As New Year’s Eve fast approaches, Nintendo and Intelligent System’s mobile juggernaut Fire Emblem Heroes prepares to launch their third Special Heroes banner based on the holiday since the game launched in 2017.

Fire Emblem Heroes is a free-to-play spin-off title which utilizes a simplified version of the series’ tactical role-playing combat across 8×6 grids. Over nearly three years, the game has slowly been releasing characters from all of Fire Emblem’s 30-year history for players to potentially summon using orbs (obtained through in-game activities or microtransactions) on themed banners of typically four units.

The “Renewed Spirit” banner, which will be released on December 31, 2019 at 11:00 p.m. PT, is the latest in a long line of holiday offerings where characters wear special alternate costumes (in this case, kimonos), rather than necessarily being grouped by the original game in which they were introduced or by a skill they possess.

The original “Happy New Year!” banner released in 2017 featured a trio of characters from Fire Emblem Fates, a collection of three titles released internationally on the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. The “New Year’s of Fire and Ice” banner in 2018 instead focused on variants for characters who originated in Heroes, namely from the Norse mythology-based lands of Múspell and Nifl that served as a backdrop for the game’s second “Book,” or main story campaign.

“Renewed Spirit” is blending those previous styles. It features two original characters from Heroes (technically three, if one counts the Duo Hero comprised of Prince Alfonse and Princess Sharena from the mobile title’s main kingdom of Askr), as well as two beast units who can transform into animal forms: Lethe from Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn and Selkie from Fire Emblem Fates.

However the most exciting new addition for long-time fans of the series is undoubtedly Anna, a character who has appeared in just about every mainline and spin-off Fire Emblem games as both an NPC and playable unit. She serves as the commander of Askr’s army in Heroes, yet is thus far one of a few characters considered native to the mobile title that has yet to receive any alternate costume.

A variant of Eir, the headlining original character for the Book III story campaign, also appears in the final shot of the Special Heroes’ trailer, meaning she will be available to players through an event in the near future.

While there does not appear to be a general connecting thread across the weapon skills of these new holiday characters, Intelligent Systems is clearly using the banner to celebrate recent additions to the game: The Duo Heroes (of which only three have been released prior to Alfonse), as well as the beast unit archetype (a series staple first added to Heroes this January).

The developers’ focus on the Duo Hero specifically is apparent through a “Tips & Tricks” video released by Nintendo’s Mobile-focused YouTube channel on December 26.

Because they reflect these new additions, the characters being added in this year’s final banner are apt representations of the mobile game’s ongoing success… Whether or not players have the spare orbs to roll the dice and attempt to summon them for battle.

Fire Emblem Heroes is available now on iOS and Android mobile devices.
