The Xbox Games Showcase kicked off in about as big a way as possible by showcasing a first look at Halo Infinite gameplay in a demo trailer. Halo Infinite is an Xbox Series X launch title and is one of the most important games in that console’s exclusive lineup, something that’s not been lost on Microsoft as the company has made the game a central part of its marketing campaign in the buildup to next-gen launch.

Halo Infinite was a known quantity heading into the Xbox Games Showcase, but as far as what the game looked like and played like, a lot of questions remained. Fans have mostly been treated to cinematic teasers up until this point, and it wasn’t clear how a next-gen Halo title would run – questions over major changes to gameplay cycles persisted, for instance, while others wondered if the core elements of Halo have become dated, a problem that could be exposed by next-gen tech.

The Halo Infinite gameplay demo at Xbox Games Showcase displayed classic looking gameplay, including the sticky plasma grenade and shield technology, but it also delivered some surprising evolutions. The gameplay demonstrated some new-look design for the series, including a world map with icons that looked reminiscent to Far Cry. Master Chief is able to traverse locations based on following said map or can simply sprint through levels the way he always has, although this time he’s gunning down the Banished. The gameplay trailer also teased the inclusion of grappling hook gameplay, displaying Master Chief traversing terrain using the extension seamlessly during action.

There’s a lot to unpack in the Halo Infinity gameplay demo, which showcases the title’s campaign mode, but there were also questions generated by some absences. No demonstration of multiplayer was the biggest point of confusion for fans – the Halo series has always been inseparable from its online multiplayer experiences, and to host a major reveal without even a hint of what it looks like was odd. That being said, Xbox announced that it would be hosting another showcase down the line prior to the Xbox Series X launch date, so that could be where fans get a first glimpse of Halo Infinite multiplayer.

Despite a lot of positive takeaways from the Halo Infinite gameplay demo, the game admittedly didn’t look very next-gen during the actual demonstration of gameplay. The cutscenes, however, were visually impressive, and it’s possible graphics will be shored up during development on the way to launch – which was confirmed, once again, to happen during holiday 2020. For many, just seeing what Halo Infinite running on the future of Xbox will be enough for now, with more details likely to come in the near future.
