First Look at Disneys Princess & The Frog Splash Mountain Ride Remake

Disney has revealed the first look at its Splash Mountain ride remade with a The Princess and the Frog theme. Based on the controversial film Song of the South, Splash Mountain has been one of Disney’s most iconic rides since its creation in 1989. It is located in Critter Country at Disneyland park and is one of the most expensive attractions built by Walt Disney Imagineers.

Released in 1946, Song of the South features the Oscar-winning song “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” and follows a young boy who visits his grandmother’s plantation during the end of the Civil War. Deemed highly controversial for containing racist stereotypes and glossing over the topic of slavery, Disney has kept Song of the South tucked away and refused to release the film as part of the Disney+ catalog. Last year, the Walt Disney Company announced that the Splash Mountain rides at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World would receive a makeover, and the plunging log ride would be reimagined with a Princess and the Frog theme. Now, it appears the spirit of New Orleans is slowly coming to life.

Disney has shared a first official look at the new Princess and the Frog theme for the Splash Mountain ride. Released in 2009, The Princess and the Frog is an animated fairy tale set in 1920s New Orleans, featuring Disney’s first Black princess, Tiana. Overseen by Disney’s top Imagineers, the refresh of Splash Mountain will have a story that takes place after “the final kiss” from the film. The log ride journey will see characters characters Prince Naveen and Louis the Alligator join Princess Tiana as they head to a Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans. According to Disney, Imagineers have worked closely with the Chase family, owners of the restaurant Dooky’s Chase (restaurant founder, Leah Chase, was one of the inspirations for Princess Tiana) in New Orleans, to ensure the spirit of the city was captured in the renovations. Of course, Disney’s long-awaited Splash Mountain update arrives at the ideal time, as the company officially kicked off its first-ever World Princess Week. At this time, it remains unclear when the Splash Mountain attraction will debut its new theme in person.

Refreshing Splash Mountain to reflect the moralistic principles at the core of The Princess and the Frog and removing the ride’s offensive origins is a step forward, but there’s still work to be done. Perhaps the reimagining of Splash Mountain will lead to a re-think of many other Disneyland attractions that have stirred controversy. Indeed, it could have been changes made to Splash Mountain that led to the overdue revamp of the Jungle Cruise ride back in July. Regardless, Princess Tiana moving into Splash Mountain will no doubt create a more enjoyable and wholesome experience for Disneyland’s visitors.
