What does a world-renowned bandleader of a smashing, psychedelic band do with his free time? The answer is write movie scripts steeped in power fantasy, according to Z2 Comics’ new tome by the cartoon funsters: Gorillaz Almanac, written by Ed Caruana and Thomas O’Malley with contributions from Gorillaz member Remi Kabaka and art by the legendary Jamie Hewlett, co-founder of the venerable band. Since popping onto the scene in 2001 with their tide-changing mega-hit “Clint Eastwood”, the globe’s most famous virtual band has woven their way in-and-out of the social fabric within our popular culture like a honey-bee with the ability to knit on some kind of avid-acting amphetamine. While their chart-topping songs have captured the hearts and minds of millions of people all over the globe, this exclusive first look offers a fleeting glimpse into one of the mercurial Murdoc’s most deeply held dreams: to be the star of a self-penned action-packed blockbuster movie… albeit one possessed of a few, somewhat blatant, overtones of intense egoism the pickle-man is known for.

Comprised of the dimwitted, yet well-meaning singer 2D, the ethereal, meditative guitarist Noodle, laid-back yet watchful drummer Russel and maniacal Satanist mad man/bassist, the green-skinned Murdoc, Gorillaz was conceived in 1998 by Hewlett and his then-flat mate, British pop idol Damon Albarn, as a sardonic satire on popular culture, using the cartoon inventions of Hewlett as a “Josie and the Pussycats”-esque face for their cutting social commentary and oft-opaque psychologically-tinged psychedelia. Despite Hewlett’s past as a highly regarded creator of comic books himself with the surreal and incisive Tank Girl, Gorillaz has rarely trodden down the path of the comic strip, with their previous publication, 2006’s Rise of the Ogre, instead of being more of a band narrative spliced with random curiosities. This newest offering, the highly anticipated Almanac (a stylistic take on the British hardcover annuals of yesteryear) takes a look back at the band through their 20-year history with new, amazing art by Hewlett and all manner of humorous strips, stories, interviews, and guest appearances by former real and fictional collaborators such as Del the Funky Homosapien, Paula Cracker and Cortez the Raven.

In this first look, Murdoc shares with the world what at one time was his hoped-for magnum opus, an incorrectly-formatted and somewhat shoddily written film script entitled “Doublecross Boulevard”. Originally having penned this narrative back in the lead-up to the band’s 2005 masterpiece, the album Demon Days, Murdoc was seemingly unhappy with his inability to sell the work, leading to his attempted burning of the manuscript to cinders in a fireplace. Luckily for Murdoc’s many fans, the stalwart 2D managed to save a few pages for posterity, published here in the Almanac for the first time. Taking the form of a finesse-lacking noir ala The Maltese Falcon (except with no subtlety), Murdoc casts himself as renegade Detective Murdoc Maguire, who must tangle with the likes of ‘Fat Head’ Hobbs, a notorious crime boss, in order to save Mayor Sharon Stone. His fellow bandmates also appear cast as second-bit players in this runaway thriller built upon intricate and heart-wrenching betrayal.

There’s this and more in the Almanac, including pages from Murdoc’s supposedly upcoming memoir for those who need even more of a Murdoc fix detailing his fabled deal with The Devil. This hefty tome of Gorillaz lore includes folk tale-style yarns of the unshakable Noodle fighting demons, retrospectives on Russel’s childhood and bizarre theories on cooking expertise and a look at 2D’s first art exhibition! There’s something here for everyone, if you enjoy madcap satirical carnage at its finest. Check out this exclusive first look below!
