Based on the iconic comic book series Archie Comics originally created by chief illustrator Bob Montana and writer Vic Bloom, the forthcoming TV drama series Riverdale produced by The CW with network heavyweight Greg Berlanti executive producing is all set to turn heads when it sees its premiere early next year. Primed to feature a moody tone and an enigmatic atmosphere to match the very best episodes of the cult-classic David Lynch creation Twin Peaks, the latest iteration of the perennial American teenager Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa) and his crew of friends and confidants is sure to turn the head of even the most devoted Archie Comics reader.

Whether or not Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will do a good job of bringing one of the longest-running comic book properties to the small screen remains to be seen, though anyone who has been paying attention to the production thus far knows that Riverdale will offer a depiction of Archie like none before it. Montana may have been inspired by mid-twentieth century mid-western values in his original conception of the eponymous town and its residents, but things are definitely looking more contemporary in the first promo for The CW TV show adaptation.

In the footage featured above, potential viewers can get their first look at the small town murder myster soon to come in Riverdale proper. Hyping the fact that the new series comes from the same people that brought the likes of The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl to the small screen, the latest original series from The CW looks to offers fans of Archie Comics a whole new way to look at the perennial small town and its frequent hero – with a decided emphasis this time around on his dashing good looks and toned, muscular frame.

There is little about this new trailer that will leave viewers hoping to see some of the lighthearted optimism inherent to the comic book series that originated in the 1940s and 1950s brought to bear on the small screen. For everyone else, Riverdale should be another teen drama fit to please fans of salacious adolescent fare.

Only time will tell whether or not general viewers will tune in to watch Riverdale when it finally airs in late January 2017, but with any luck its ominous tone and brooding visuals will entice at least a view devoted viewers to give it a try. Montana’s original creation is nowhere to be found in The CW original series, which may be the deciding factor in regards to the show’s eventual success or failure.

Riverdale premieres on The CW on January 26th, 2017.
