Five Power Rangers Sequels Already Planned

The long awaited live-action reboot of Power Rangers finally hits theaters this week after months of heavy marketing, fan speculation and heated debate over the franchise’s new look and direction. The movie stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G and Ludi Lin as the five Rangers and they’ll be backed up by Bryan Cranston’s Zordon and Bill Hader as Alpha 5. Elizabeth Banks is on villain duty as evil witch, Rita Repulsa.

In the current cinematic climate, sequels are big business, representing a large amount of studio revenue and it has become increasingly common for studios to plan multi-installment franchises well in advance. A recent example includes Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, with author J.K. Rowling announcing a planned series of five movies shortly before the release of the first installment.

It now appears as if Power Rangers has similar aspirations as Haim Saban – the man behind the nineties Power Rangers series and a producer on the forthcoming reboot – has stated that a total of five sequels have been plotted out. According to Variety, Saban claims:

“We already have a six-movie story arc… If this film is as successful as I hope, on March 24, on March 25 we’ll have the first story meeting for Movie No. 2.”

Saban’s ambition certainly deserves commendation and it could perhaps be argued that it’s preferable to plan ahead rather than a studio green-lighting a sequel and filmmakers being forced to quickly come up with a sub-par concept for a second movie. Clearly, the producer is expecting an immediate positive reaction to the reboot and is eager to get to work on a follow up.

Despite Saban’s optimism, some fans may feel that planning five movies ahead is perhaps a case of running before one can walk. Ever since the explosion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there has been an emerging trend in Hollywood that shared universes and multi-film arcs are the future and. It’s too early to tell whether this approach will work outside of Marvel or not in the long rune, but plotting out five films before the first is even fully released could result in less attention to detail being paid to each individual entry.

With that said, Power Rangers certainly has plenty of options to explore in this multi-movie arc. Whilst it might be too early to consider bringing in later iterations of the team – the Ninjas or Zeo Rangers for example – two elements that will almost certainly be part of Saban’s six film plan will be the introduction of Lord Zedd as an antagonist and the addition of Green Ranger Tommy to the team. Both of these characters were well-received by fans of the original series, so perhaps there is a reason to be excited for this potential glut of Power Rangers movies after all.

Craig first began contributing to Screen Rant in 2016, several years after graduating college, and has been ranting ever since, mostly to himself in a darkened room. Having previously written for various sports and music outlets, Craig’s interest soon turned to TV and film, where a steady upbringing of science fiction and comic books finally came into its own. Craig has previously been published on sites such as Den of Geek, and after many coffee-drenched hours hunched over a laptop, part-time evening work eventually turned into a full-time career covering everything from the zombie apocalypse to the Starship Enterprise via the TARDIS. Since joining the Screen Rant fold, Craig has been involved in breaking news stories and mildly controversial ranking lists, but now works predominantly as a features writer. Jim Carrey is Craig’s top acting pick and favorite topics include superheroes, anime and the unrecognized genius of the High School Musical trilogy.
