Flash 10 Things Every Fan Should Know About XS

The Flash Family is one of the biggest legacies in all of comics. Starting with the Golden Age Flash of the 1940s who wore a silver helmet with wings to well into the 853rd century where a future speedster carries on the name, the lineage of the Fastest People Alive runs all through the DC Universe. Flashes have been members of the Teen Titans, the Justice League, and even the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Jenni Ognats, better known as XS, is a future Flash living a thousand years in the future and keeping in the legacy alive during one of the most important periods of the DC Universe. Or, at least, she was doing that until Doctor Manhattan changed the course of time. Now, her future—or lack of one—remains a mystery.

10 Granddaughter of Flash

After a series of horrific events that included the seeming death of Iris West and the trial of the Flash—aka Barry Allen—for the murder of Reverse-Flash, Barry moved to the far future to retire from the superhero world and spend the rest of his days with Iris, who was from that time period.

Soon after, Iris became pregnant with twins, but Flash’s retirement came to an end before his children were born when the skies turned red and the Crisis on Infinite Earths began. The Crisis would take Flash’s life, making him the first speedster to die in the line of duty.

9 Daughter of Dawn Allen

Dawn Allen and her brother Don grew up without a father, but they did inherit his super speed. As the Tornado Twins, they carried on their father’s legacy, becoming heroes of the early 31st century. Dawn married Jeven Ognats, and together they had a child, a girl named Jenni.

While Jenni was born without super speed, scientists believed that she carried the gene, and that it just needed to be activated. Instead of forcing the activation of her meta-gene, Dawn and Jeven decided to let their daughter grow up like a regular little girl, possibly because they saw what was happening to Jenni’s cousin.

8 Cousin of Impulse

Dawn’s brother Don also married. His wife was Meloni Thawne, an ancestor of Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash. Don and Melonie had a son, Bart, who was born with super speed.

Bart was aging at an accelerated pace, turning twelve just two years after being born, and, to ensure Bart’s mind grew with his body, he was placed inside a virtual reality world that could keep up with him, giving Bart an altered belief in how the world works. Trapped in a virtual world, it seemed like Bart would never actually get to meet his cousin Jenni or any member of the family.

7 The Dominators

When an alien race called the Dominators attacked Earth, Don and Dawn Allen took them on as the Tornado Twins. Tragically, the brother and sister superheroes died in the battle. The Dominators then took the young Bart Allen and Jenni Ognats to experiment on.

Luckily, Earthgov military was able to defeat the Dominators and rescue Bart and Jenni, but then they decided to use Bart for their own experiments. That is when Iris West chose to break her grandson out and bring him to the past where he would be safe. In a short time, Jenni lost her mother, her uncle, her cousin, and her grandmother.

6 Emerging Powers

Jenni’s powers first manifested when the Dominators were holding her and her father Jeven in a detention center. When the Dominators began to torture Javen, Jenni’s super-speed kicked in, giving her the ability to escape her captors and save her father. Her battle against the Dominators opened up a path of attack for the Earthgov forces, bringing down the Dominator invasion of Earth.

With the Dominators defeated and her powers in full effect, Jenni began to practice using her speed so that she could become a hero like her mother before her. With a new team of heroes recently forming, Jenni had a goal in mind.

5 Member of the Legion of Super-Heroes

Formed by the United Planets, the Legion of Super-Heroes was made up of superpowered teens who all showed incredible courage and loved the stories about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the other icons from the age of heroes.

Taking on the superhero name XS, Jenni auditioned to join the Legion and was quickly accepted. While she was nervous at first, XS quickly showed off her skills and proved that she more than deserved to be a member of the Legion. Through her daring deeds with the futuristic team of teens, XS kept the Flash legacy alive.

4 Traveled To The Past

Not long after joining the Legion of Super-Heroes, XS and the team found themselves a thousand years in the past during the Final Night. With the help of the Legion, the modern-day superheroes were able to save the Earth when a Sun-Eater lived up to its name and destroyed the sun.

XS was able to meet her uncle Wally West, the third Flash, and see her cousin Bart, who had become the teen hero Impulse and grandma Iris. When the Legion left to return to their own time, XS chose to stay behind a while longer to spend time with family.

3 Fought Alongside The Flash Family

XS had planned to just have some fun with her cousin Impulse, but the return of Savitar from the Speed Force put an end to that. The superspeed villain who was able to share his power with the followers of his cult wanted to kill every other speedster on Earth so that he alone would have access to the Speed Force.

XS teamed up with Flash, Impulse, Max Mercury, and Johnny and Jesse Quick to stop Savitar and save the Speed Force. Tragically, Johnny Quick died in the fight, and Wally West was believed lost in the Speed Force. When the battle was over, XS returned to her own time.

2 Missing In Action

Back in her own time, XS continued to be a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. When the team broke up, XS joined Star Boy in saving the Xanthians from being destroyed by the Robotica. The duo were trapped fighting the war on Xanthu when the Legion of Super-Heroes reformed and came to save them.

When Barry Allen returned from the Flashpoint, he found a new world. While Flash didn’t know it, Doctor Manhattan had changed the universe, and part of that change wiped the Legion of Super-Heroes, and XS, out of the timeline. In the new reality with 52 Earths making up the Multiverse, there was no Legion.

1 Back, But Where?

Following the events of Doomsday Clock, XS has reappeared. Most recently, she helped the Flash Family battle the Legion of Zoom, helping save her grandfather from Reverse-Flash.

After the battle with the Legion of Zoom, XS left to There is also a new Legion of Super-Heroes, but XS does not appear to be a member of the team—at least, not yet. At the moment, it appears that XS is a hero out of time and space, existing in a reality where her past never existed. What the future holds for the speedster remains a mystery.
