Flash Finally Gets Closure on His Darkest Moment (But Can He Accept It)

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Teen Titans Academy #9

In DC Comics’ Teen Titans Academy, Wally West’s Flash finally gets real closure for his darkest day. While 2018’s Heroes in Crisis event saw a traumatized Wally accidentally killing several heroes and villains when he lost control of the Speed Force, he’s since worked hard to move on and forgive himself for what happened. However, there have still been moments where he’s naturally felt guilty. That being said, one of the hardest losses was Roy Harper, Wally’s fellow Titan known as Red Arrow/Arsenal. However, Roy has recently come back to life and the new Teen Titans Academy #9 sees Flash reuniting with his old friend.

While Roy Harper officially came back to life with the start of DC’s new Infinite Frontier era, Arsenal chose to keep his return a secret due to his resurrection as a Black Lantern. However, Teen Titans Academy #8 from writer Tim Sheridan and Mike Norton sees Roy Harper having returned for real in the pages of the DC series, wondering why there are so many kids in Titans Tower and why there’s a statue of him in the front of the “Roy Harper Academy.” His fellow Titans had wanted to honor him after his death during Heroes in Crisis, not knowing that he’d already been back for some time.

That being said, the cat’s now out of the bag and Roy Harper is officially back with the Titans. Also, Teen Titans Academy #9 sees Wally reuniting with Roy as the two share a big hug, confirming that Roy doesn’t blame Wally for what happened during Heroes in Crisis when Wally lost control. Even so, it certainly seems as though Wally is still trying to make up for what he did given his overzealousness despite Roy’s forgiveness, talking way too fast and hilariously offering Roy way too much food.

While there may be more reconciliation to come with Roy’s return, it does seem as though Wally will have to make peace with the fact that everything is OK and that there’s nothing he needs to make up for as far as Roy is concerned. However, the Titans’ mysterious foe Red X has already used Flash’s unintentional murders against the Academy, and it will be interesting to see what he may do next in response to Red Arrow’s return. However, it certainly seems as though Red X has problems of his own seeing as how the end of the issue sees him losing control himself, murdering the villain Psimon who was trying to recruit him and a handful of other students to join his Fearsome Five.

In any case, Roy Harper’s return is incredibly exciting as it coincides with Flash’s visit to the Academy. The classic Teen Titans are all back together with most of them teaching the next generation of superheroes. As a result, one has to wonder if Roy will stick around to become a teacher as well, or if he’ll be his own hero like Wally has become. Either way, it’s no doubt very satisfying for fans to see Wally getting some meaningful closure and redemption for his darkest day.
