Mortal Kombat is filled with memorable characters MK12 could utilize, but some past Mortal Kombat fighters have been left in the dust by NetherRealm.

The Mortal Kombat franchise is full of memorable characters that have been around since the series’ beginning. From Sub-Zero to Liu Kang to Shang Tsung, the list of characters that are household names in the fighting game community is vast, with characters that were introduced in subsequent titles like Kitana, Mileena, Smoke, and Ermac also making repeated appearances in later entries. However, some Mortal Kombat fighters only show up once, and then are simply forgotten about or ignored moving forward.
With a series that’s been around for as long as Mortal Kombat has, especially a fighting game, there are bound to be some duds in the pile of its many new and returning characters. The development team at NetherRealm has shown something of a flair for taking some of the lesser characters and giving them new life in the modern Mortal Kombat trilogy. Some fighters in Mortal Kombat’s roster, though, seem to be either beyond saving or ones that NetherRealm has moved on from entirely.
It seems unlikely that the team at NetherRealm will ever revisit old Mortal Kombat characters like Mokap, Ashrah, or Hotaru (outside of small cameos, of course). Each of these characters undoubtedly had a reason for existing at the time, but so far it appears like the developers seemingly aren’t interested in bringing them back in a meaningful way.
Mortal Kombat 12: Who Probably Won’t Make The Cut
Taven is another character who likely won’t return for a major role in Mortal Kombat 12. He was the protagonist of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon but hasn’t had more than a bit part since, and likely just isn’t beloved or different enough from fan-favorite protagonists to warrant another starring role. The same can be said for Hsu Hao, who was essentially just a different version of Kano back in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and didn’t do much to differentiate himself in following titles.
Another character who struggled to find his own place in the Mortal Kombat series is Kai. The Shaolin Monk’s character was simply “Liu Kang’s friend” during Mortal Kombat 4, and that lack of a real personality seems to have led to him being mostly forgotten by NetherRealm and fans alike. Moloch is in a similar situation, in that the former sub-boss hasn’t proven as popular as other mini-boss Mortal Kombat characters like Goro and Kitaro.
Other characters’ lack of appearances is a bit more puzzling. Kobra and Kira are basically the evil versions of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, respectively. NetherRealm could certainly do something interesting with them in a storyline centered around those two fan-favorites, but have decided not to. Nitara is another somewhat strange omission. She recently featured in the latest Mortal Kombat movie but hasn’t been seen in a game (outside of cameo appearances) since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Her turn in the film was short-lived though, which could mean fans shouldn’t expect to see her back in MK12.
For whatever reason, NetherRealm has decided to drop several characters from the Mortal Kombat franchise. Many of them have had their moves and personalities incorporated into old characters, but several have also just been passed over completely. While it seems unlikely that players will see these characters again, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time NetherRealm has surprised fans.
