Former NFL running back Marion Barber, who played six of his seven seasons in the league with the Dallas Cowboys, has died at the age of 38, the team confirmed Wednesday.

‘We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III,’ the Cowboys said on Twitter. ‘Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win on every down.’

Frisco (Texas) Police tell USA TODAY Sports they responded to a call earlier in the day at an apartment Barber was believed to be leasing. There, they found ‘an unattended death.’ No cause of death has been determined and an investigation is ongoing.

Barber was a fourth-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 2005 out of Minnesota.

Playing mostly as a change-of-pace back behind starter Julius Jones, Barber scored 16 touchdowns in 2006. The following season, he ran for 975 yards and 10 TDs in being named to the Pro Bowl.

Barber left the Cowboys after the 2010 season, joining the Chicago Bears for his final year in the NFL.

After retiring from football, Barber battled mental health issues and had several run-ins with police.

In 2014, he was detained by police in Mansfield, Texas, but taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation instead of arrested.

Last year, former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant noted in a social media post that things were ‘down-and-out bad’ for his ex-teammate.
