Fortnite Adds Resident Evils Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine Skins

Popular battle royale game Fortnite recently unveiled its newest character skins, Resident Evil’s Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. Both S.T.A.R.S. (and later B.S.A.A.) partners serve as the protagonists for several Resident Evil series installments – including its very first title – and are strongly associated with the survival horror franchise.

Fortnite frequently incorporates skins or other items from various media franchises, and does not shy away from collaborating with other video games. This past April, Fortnite added Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn and other cosmetic items associated with the PlayStation game. Fortnite is currently in the midst of its annual Halloween event, Fortnightmares, which features spooky themes and rewards – a seemingly perfect setting for Resident Evil characters who have experienced the horrors of zombie hordes and other menaces within their own storylines.

Fortnite revealed its “S.T.A.R.S. Team Set” today, which brings Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and other Resident-Evil-related items to the Fortnite Item Shop. The two characters also have alt skins available in addition to their S.T.A.R.S. appearances, both of which give players the option to sport a Raccoon City Resident Evil 3 appearance for Valentine or a Resident Evil Village Hound Wolf Squad style for Redfield. The crossover also features other items, such as “HOT DOGGER” and “Stun Rod” pickaxes. The two characters join Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy and others in Fortnite’s Gaming Legends Series.

In light of Resident Evil’s 25th anniversary, Jill Valentine was one of three series characters featured in another video game crossover this past May. Along with Leon S. Kennedy and antagonist Nemesis, Valentine joined Dead by Daylight, Behaviour Interactive’s asymmetrical horror game. In a similar vein, Leon S. Kennedy was added to tactical first-person shooter Rainbow Six Seige – porting the Capcom character into the Ubisoft-published title. Seeing as these characters have made frequent appearances beyond the confines of the Resident Evil franchise, perhaps other games will have the opportunity to incorporate their likeness in the future.

The Gaming Legend Series in Fortnite seems like a great opportunity to bring attention to landmark video game franchises, new and old. Seeing as Fortnite attracts players of all ages, some might not be familiar with the long-running Resident Evil series (first released in 1996). This crossover could give the horror franchise some additional publicity – although, Resident Evil is one of the most critically acclaimed series of all time, so additional publicity might not be needed. That said, this crossover will likely fit right into the spooky Fortnightmares event.
