Fortnite Finally Admits Impostors Mode Was Inspired By Among Us

A rundown of everything featured in v18.20 sees Epic Games finally admit that Innersloth’s Among Us did indeed inspire the creation of Fortnite’s Impostors Mode. Epic released Impostors Mode for Fortnite back in August, allowing 10 players – two impostors and eight agents – to assume their specified roles while aboard a submarine.

The agents performed assigned tasks, while the two impostors set about sabotaging the submarine and discretely dispatching other players. In true Among Us fashion, agents can host discussions and share information about the turn of events, all in an effort to suss out the on-board saboteurs. It’s no surprise, then, that Epic quickly sat on the receiving end of accusations that it blatantly copied the hit social deduction game. To make matters worse, the publisher neglected to credit Innersloth, a decision that confused both fans and Among Us creators. Fortunately, patch notes for the most recent Fortnite update ameliorate the issue. (Kind of.)

A post on Epic Games’ official website outlines what players can expect from Fortnite v18.20, which goes live today across all platforms. The new patch includes a few major bug fixes, a refresh for Return Requests, and improvements to Impostors. Upon mentioning the latter, the Epic post specifically credits Innersloth’s Among Us as inspiration for the submarine-set game mode in Fortnite. The brief line in question reads as follows: “v18.20 brings improvements to Impostors, the game mode inspired by Among Us from Innersloth!” As Eurogamer notes, however, credit to Innersloth only appears via the blog post and not in the in-game description.

Hopefully, Epic eventually references Innersloth in Fortnite, where most players will actually see the credit being given. The blog post shoutout is nice, of course, but only so many active users keep track of in-game happenings through Epic’s website postings.

Fornite doesn’t count as the only game to capitalize on Among Us’ surge in popularity in 2020. Steam’s First Class Trouble constitutes one such experience, dropping players onto a luxury airship. Dread Hunger serves as another, though it shakes up the established Among Us formula by implementing demanding survival mechanics. It’s clear social deduction experiences as a gameplay premise will stick around for the foreseeable future.
