Fox Cancels Almost Family After Timothy Hutton Rape Allegations Surface

Fox cancels Almost Family, after rape allegations surface involving series star Timothy Hutton. Based on Sisters, an Australian drama, Almost Family premiered on Fox in October 2019. The show centered around a fertility doctor (Hutton) that used his sperm to conceive at least 100 children throughout his career. As this revelation comes to light, other characters are introduced. Julia, one of the doctor’s many offspring, reunites with two of her half-siblings to deal with the bombshell as well as other issues which have been affecting their lives. Brittany Snow, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and Emily Osment also starred.

Almost Family, which was developed by Annie Weisman, ran for 13 episodes. The series was greeted with a less than stellar reception by critics. While the cast garnered praise, many reviewers noted that the drama could not overcome its premise. In particular, Almost Family was dinged for its refusal to genuinely grapple with the criminal implications at the center of its main storyline. In terms of ratings, the show failed to make a splash. The premiere episode was watched by 2.73 million viewers. By the finale, that number had dropped to less than a million. Now, with a rape allegation surrounding Hutton, Fox has decided to pull the plug on Almost Family.

The Wrap reports that Almost Family has been cancelled after one season. The decision comes just hours after a Buzzfeed News story was published, in which 50-year-old model and former child actress Sera Johnston accused Hutton of raping her in a Vancouver hotel room when she was 14 years old. Johnston claims that the rape happened in 1983, after she met Hutton at a restaurant.

Johnston, who says she considered Hutton an idol after seeing his Oscar-winning performance in Ordinary People, was invited back to the actor’s hotel room. Once there, Johnston says she was led into the bedroom, and that she was undressed by Hutton and one of his friends. Despite her pleas for the two men to stop, Johnston claims that Hutton raped her while his friend watched and then joined the assault. Per his representatives, Hutton “completely and unequivocally denies” the allegations. Hutton’s lawyer added to Buzzfeed News that the actor has never met Johnston, arguing that the claims amount to an extortion attempt.

Johnston and Hutton had reached an initial financial settlement of $135,000 after the issue was raised in 2017. Johnston later abandoned the agreement, which included a denial from Hutton. Johnston says she felt inspired to make her story public, after seeing others speak out about figures like Bryan Singer and R. Kelly. There is no statute of limitations for sexual assault claims in Canada.

Hutton has appeared in many different film and television projects over the years. His most recent credits include The Haunting of Hill House, How to Get Away with Murder, and Jack Ryan. Given the circumstances, and given that the subject matter of Almost Family struck a deeply negative chord with many viewers, the cancellation decision is understandable.
