Frasier (1993-2004) began with Frasier Crane from Cheers (1982-1993) and expanded his family life in Seattle. The sitcom is known for its clever writing and laughably ironic situations. Frasier’s wit and sarcasm match that of his brother, Niles, and his father, Martin/”Marty.”

Fans might remember the funny scenes on Frasier best, but the show also had its fair share of serious moments. What are some of the deep issues that Frasier and his loved ones worked through together?

10 Different Ways Of Showing Affection

In season two, Frasier goes into the fragile topic of humans showing affection. Frasier and Niles complain to Marty Crane that he does not say, “I love you.”

Humans show emotion and affection in different ways, which is something Marty models throughout the series. Smartly titled “Breaking the Ice,” the episode occurs over an ice fishing trip for the Crane men.

9 Dealing With Trauma

Marty carries some trauma with him from being shot in the hip and injured while on the police force. The shooting caused Marty to slow down physically and walk with his cane.

The episode “A Day in May” in season eight is quite mysterious and does not reveal what Marty is up to until the end when he must hear the shooter testify in hopes of gaining parole all these years later. As the victim, Marty is given the chance to make a statement but has nothing to say, and the shooter’s parole is denied. The event clearly has an effect on Marty.

8 Roz’s Pregnancy

Roz Doyle knows what it’s like to be the butt of the joke and to be the one telling the joke. She puts up with a lot of teasing from Frasier and Niles about her sex life, and Roz teases the brothers about various aspects of their lives, in turn. Roz unexpectedly becomes pregnant in season five and tells Frasier.

The show follows Roz’s situation closely and doesn’t sugarcoat the difficulties of being a working single mom. Roz loves her daughter, Alice, and feels a net of support and encouragement from her family and friends.

7 Class Issues Between Father And Sons

The third episode of the entire series presents an ongoing divide between Marty Crane and his sons. Both Frasier and Niles are known to be pretentious and insistent on what they presume to be the finest things in life. Marty isn’t interested in their choice for fine dining, so he takes them to his favorite steak and potato joint.

Frasier and Niles are incredibly rude at the restaurant and make fun of the place, which understandably hurts Marty’s feelings. The episode opens up a conversation about Frasier and Niles’ upper-crust attitude versus Marty’s more personable, down-to-Earth way of life.

6 Daphne’s Eating Disorder

One of the biggest issues Frasier handles is Daphne’s eating disorder, but the series doesn’t handle the issue well. Daphne starts to gain weight in season eight and has trouble with bingeing, which leads to a noticeably changed appearance (Jane Leeves was also pregnant at the time).

The Cranes gossip about Daphne’s weight gain and make jokes about her, falling into the sad norm of body-shaming on 1990s sitcoms rather than going against it.

5 Making Life-Changing Decisions

There are plenty of life-altering decisions on Frasier, but Daphne makes one of the biggest by leaving her fiancé, Donny, at the altar. Daphne and Donny are to be married in the seventh season, but Daphne is destined to be with Niles.

Donny later sues Daphne over the matter, adding an unexpected twist to the jilted lover trope. This whole saga is a big part of Daphne’s life during that point in the series.

4 Remembering A Loved One

In season seven, Frasier dates a woman who looks just like his deceased mother. Many fans remember the episode, “Momma Mia,” because of the odd premise. It gets to the root of a deeper aspect of Niles and Frasier’s lives.

The brothers miss their mother as much as Marty misses his wife, and the series shows that the grief process can take different paths and different lengths of time for everyone. At the end of “Momma Mia,” Marty, Frasier, and Niles sit together and watch old home videos of Mrs. Crane.

3 Relationships Between Elderly People

Frasier succeeds in sending a message that love and romance are viable at any age. Marty has some meaningful moments where relationships are concerned. He has to walk away from someone when he needs more time after the loss of his wife.

Marty ends the series in a relationship with Ronee, a woman who babysat Frasier and Niles when she was a teenager. Ronee and Marty have their wedding ceremony in the series finale. It’s important and commendable that Martin’s relationships matter on the show as much as anyone else’s.

2 Treatment Of LGBTQ+ Identity

One recurring “joke” the writers place throughout Frasier is a misconception that Frasier is gay. People sometimes mistake his sophisticated air and love of art for gay identity, even in conversation with characters who are actually gay. This all comes to a head in season eleven when Frasier lets Alistair, the director of the Seattle Opera Guild, believe that he is gay.

Frasier does this to try to climb up the ladder in the opera community, and Alistair gives him a place on the opera board when he thinks Frasier is attracted to him. Niles and Daphne even point out the problem with what Frasier is doing, but Frasier chooses to take advantage of the LGBTQ+ community anyway. Yet another missed opportunity to correctly tackle an important issue.

1 Niles’ Heart Condition

The tenth season of Frasier includes a somber storyline for Niles. He finds out that he has a genetic heart condition (his father, Marty, later has a heart attack on the series) and must undergo serious surgery. While rallying around Niles, the Cranes and Roz remind each other not to take anything for granted.

They then argue a little, but they give Niles and Daphne their fullest support and love. As Niles is wheeled into surgery, he looks through the doors along the hallway and has flashbacks of other hospital moments in his life, and so do the other characters. Everyone welcomes Niles home after the surgery, and Frasier reflects on his prayers for Niles.
