Friday Night Lights Reboot Is Right To Leave Coach Taylor Behind

The planned Friday Night Lights reboot will be better off leaving Coach Taylor behind for good to make room for new characters. The original show about a small-town Texas high school football coach and his family ran for five years on NBC, wrapping up in 2011 with a finale that has been hailed by fans and critics as one of the best endings in modern American Television. Stars Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton both won Emmy awards for their acclaimed performances as Coach Eric and Tami Taylor.

The Taylor family’s story ended with Coach Taylor moving to Philadelphia after Tami accepts the job of Dean of Admissions at a famous university there. Even though Coach misses Texas, he’s happy supporting his wife in her own ambitions, and he even finds a new local high school to coach football for. While fans have speculated for years about how a reboot could bring Coach Taylor back, Executive Producer Brian Grazer recently confirmed in an interview with Collider that the new series, which could begin shooting as early as next year, will go in a different direction complete with a new cast, a new town, and new possibilities.

By shifting the new series’ focus to a fresh crop of characters, Friday Night Lights will ensure that the Taylors will be able to enjoy their happily-ever-after. Tami Taylor actress Connie Britton agreed that bringing the Taylors out of retirement could potentially undermine the already-perfect ending. After so much struggle and heartbreak through the seasons, it’s fair to say that Coach Taylor and Tami have earned a little peace and quiet. While it’s arguable that Friday Night Lights doesn’t need a reboot at all, if Grazer and company are determined to make it happen, at least they won’t risk undoing the brilliant conclusion of the original series, and newer audiences won’t feel pressured to binge all five seasons of it just to feel good about watching the new series.

Friday Night Lights has no shortage of good side characters who could return in guest appearances, but keeping the main focus on an entirely new community opens the door to a wide range of possible stories to explore. According to Glazer, the new series will pick up in 2015 in Del Rio, Texas, a border town. The cultural and political landscape of America, particularly surrounding immigration, has changed drastically since the original series ended ten years ago, and it may be a good thing to explore them through new eyes instead of dragging Coach Taylor into a political issue he wasn’t written for.

Ultimately, the next era of Friday Night Lights will most likely be bittersweet. Coach Taylor was the heart of the original series that endeared fans to the franchise, and his absence will be felt no matter what. It won’t be the same watching that world without him, but the values he embodied on the show–hard work, perseverance, and family– are universal. They exist in every community, and it will be exciting to see who will champion them on the new series.
