Friday Night Lights: The Most Unnecessary Storylines

Friday Night Lights includes some incredible storylines – and some that just didn’t make any sense for the show.

Friday Night Lights has a long list of fans who aren’t typically interested in sports but who were happy to tune into a series that focused on football. The story of a Texas high school team is emotional and sweet, with enough dating drama and family issues to keep fans coming back.

This is such a great show, but there were still some mistakes that were made. Here are the 10 most unnecessary storylines on Friday Night Lights.

10 The Decision To Split The Teens In Dillon Into Two High Schools

The characters on Friday Night Lights are some of the best on TV, but this was definitely not the best storyline. While splitting the teenagers in Dillon, Texas into two different high schools was meant to cause tension and strife, it fell flat on the show.

It was already clear that the kids in this town were divided by their bank accounts, and driving that point home wasn’t really all that necessary.

9 Matt Flirts With Another Girl And Makes Julie Jealous

Matt Sacaren (Zach Gilford) and Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden) are clearly one of the better couples on Friday Night Lights, so it was never necessary for either one of these characters to have another love interest.

In the season two episode “How Did I Get Here,” Matt flirts with Lauren (Kim Smith), a girl who is new, and this makes Julie jealous. But no fan wanted to see this happen. Matt and Julie should have been together the whole time.

8 Lyla Becomes Super Religious

Religion is a tricky subject to talk about on a TV show. It didn’t make much sense for Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly) to become super religious in the second season of Friday Night Lights. She was enough of a “good girl” that fans may have assumed she had a lot of faith anyway, so it didn’t seem necessary to make this so clear.

The show didn’t deal with this issue in a very smart or nuanced way, and Lyla could have had many other storylines.

7 Tim Leaves College

Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) might not seem like the college type at the beginning of Friday Night Lights. He’s grown up poor and without much family and hasn’t really applied himself in school.

That’s why it’s so thrilling to see him get into college… and that’s why it’s so awful to see him leave college in the fourth season. This should never have happened. If Tim was going to leave, why did he even go at all? It would have been so much more interesting to see Tim actually succeed.

6 Julie Starts Seeing A Married Teacher

In the fifth season, Julie makes a choice that doesn’t feel totally in character: she starts seeing a T.A. at her college who has a wife. Derek Bishop (Gil McKinney) is such a random person for her to date, and it doesn’t make any sense.

Julie went through quite the phase of rebelling against her family back in high school, but now that she’s in college, it doesn’t seem like she would still be making the same wrong choices.

5 Jason Gets A Woman Named Erin Pregnant

In the show’s second season, Jason Street (Scott Porter) starts dating a woman named Erin, and then she gets pregnant. This is a big deal because he didn’t think that he could have biological kids because of his serious football injury that happened back at the beginning of the show.

Even though it’s nice to watch Jason as a dad, this isn’t a necessary storyline because it would have been better to see him start a family on his own terms. There’s also a lot of tension because Erin doesn’t think that Jason can make enough money for her and the baby, and that’s not fair because Jason is definitely trying to grow up and deal with the hand he has been dealt.

4 Jason Asks Lyla To Marry Him

When Friday Night Lights begins, Jason and Lyla are the golden couple and no one would ever imagine them splitting up, but his injury changes everything.

In the first season, Jason asks Lyla to marry him, and she says yes. But this is a crazy thing for either one of them to think about. They’re still in high school and they’re way too young for a commitment like this. They should have simply gotten back together instead.

3 Tami Has A Baby

There’s a lot going on in Tami Taylor (Connie Britton) and Coach Eric Taylor’s (Kyle Chandler) world, so when Tami has a baby named Gracie in the second season episode “Last Days Of Summer,” it feels so unnecessary.

Between raising Julie, dealing with conflict in their marriage because of high school football problems, and doing their tough jobs, this couple didn’t need to add a baby into the mix.

2 Becky Competes In A Beauty Pageant

In the fourth season, Becky Sproles (Madison Burge) competes in a beauty pageant. It’s not the first time that she has done so, but it doesn’t make it any less sexist or awkward.

Instead of focusing on such an old-fashioned activity, it would have been great if Becky had a more interesting storyline.

1 Tyra And Landry Murder Someone

In the second season of FNL, Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki) and Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons) murder someone, and this is widely considered one of the worst storylines on the show.

The man that they kill was going to assault Tyra, but killing him and then keeping that a secret seems like a strange decision. No fan knows why this happened, and it seemed like the most unnecessary storyline that could have possibly taken place.
