While Friends has certainly stood the test of time and remained incredibly popular with new audiences as the show grows older, not everything about the show has timed well. As is the case with most older shows, not everything that is acceptable and funny from the past remains the case forever.

Many things move on culturally and are no longer funny or accepted by society, and Friends suffers from this massively. Many jokes or character mannerisms simply aren’t what society except anymore, and while at the time the show could get away with them, nowadays it cannot.

Ross Geller as a character is involved in many of those moments throughout the show, whether it is things that he says or does. Within this list, we will take a look at 10 things about Ross Geller that simply wouldn’t fly if the show was made today.

10 Belittling Women

This is something that is particularly true for Joey Tribiani and his womanizer character but is also true for Ross Geller. Sure, he might be all about getting Rachel, but there are many seasons of the show where he isn’t in a relationship with her.

During that time, Ross chases around women just as much as Joey, he is just slightly less obvious about it. Whether it’s coming out with wanting to end his “dry spell,” or the way he talks about the women who don’t end up working out, it just wouldn’t work nowadays.

9 Dating His Student

Speaking of his many relationships, one that stands out, in particular, is his brief time dating Elizabeth. While the relationship might provide a few moments of humor, overall, it is something that wouldn’t go down well today simply due to the age gap and how they met.

Ross is Elizabeth’s teacher, and nowadays most people would see that as him taking advantage of a young girl, which is just unacceptable. Even though during the show itself the rest of the group do raise their eyebrows at it, nowadays so would the audience.

8 Keeping A Monkey

Anything involving an animal being kept illegally is always going to raise eyebrows, as animals such as monkeys being pets simply don’t sit well with people. Take a look at the recent Tiger King series as proof as to how shocking people find situations like this.

While comparing Ross Geller to Joe Exotic is a bit of a stretch, as he clearly cares about Marcel, that doesn’t make it right. Nowadays, it is unlikely that Ross would be given a pet monkey to have, simply due to the issues surrounding animals.

7 Ben With Girls Toys

Ross Geller’s first child, Ben, is someone who features heavily early on in the show but he then fades away later on in the series. However, an early storyline that happens with the child is the fact that he likes playing with girls dolls, rather than traditional boy toys.

While this might be a situation many people might go through in real life, nowadays it is widely accepted that it doesn’t matter if children play with different gender toys. However, Ross makes a huge deal out of it and hates the fact Ben plays with dolls.

6 A Male Nanny

Speaking of Ross Geller happily making major stereotypical judgements, when he and Rachel hire a nanny he makes a very big one. Rachel makes the decision to hire a male nanny, simply because he is good at his job and clearly cares about what he does.

However, when Ross finds out he ends up making some major stereotypical views, questioning why a nanny would be a male, going as far as to ask if he is gay. It really does not matter whether a man is a nanny, and nowadays this wouldn’t even be considered for a storyline.

5 Fancying His Cousin

Another situation about Ross Geller that simply wouldn’t fly today is the fact that during one episode he considers actually having sex with his own cousin. She heads into the city to see Ross and Monica and ends up staying at Ross’ place, but he becomes incredibly weird.

Instead of just hanging out with her like a normal family member, his mind begins to race about the possibilities of sleeping with her, simply because she’s an attractive woman. The fact she is family seems to just fly out of his mind.

4 Refusing To Divorce Rachel

Sure, Ross had been divorced twice already and that was something on his mind, but refusing to divorce Rachel after they got married in Las Vegas is another storyline that wouldn’t work today. The lack of consent or consideration for her at this point is extreme.

Nowadays, there would be a justifiable uproar if a character wasn’t allowed to have a divorce, simply because the other person involved refuses. It was made worse by the fact that they were supposed to be friends at the time, with Ross just being a plain jerk.

3 Fat Shaming

Ross Geller isn’t the only character who is responsible for this, but the amount of fat-shaming that takes place throughout Friends simply wouldn’t happen nowadays. One of the big parts of Monica’s character is the fact that she was larger in size when she was younger.

Ross, having been there throughout that period quite often likes to mock Monica throughout the series. Whether it’s in a flashback episode of the show or a joke about her past in the normal timeline, there are tons of them and it wouldn’t work today.

2 Fat Shaming A Child

While fat-shaming his sister is something that wouldn’t fly today, fat-shaming a child certainly wouldn’t. During Monica and Chandler’s wedding episode, Ross tries to impress Mona by dancing with a child from wedding to look cute, letting her dance on his feet, which certainly catches her eye.

However, when he tries to dance with Mona, another young girl, called Gert steps up to dance instead. She is larger in size than the previous girl and the joke that is being made is clear to see. However, Ross has no problem in pointing out that he can’t dance as quick due to her size, which wouldn’t go down well today.

1 His Mental Health

This isn’t really a case of Ross himself saying anything that is inappropriate but it more down to how the show writes his character. Following his break up from Emily, Ross goes through a bout of serious mental health difficulties with his anger issues becoming a big problem for him.

He actually gets put on sabbatical at work as the situation gets that bad, yet the show decides to make it into a big joke. Others poke fun at him and nowadays that simply wouldn’t be accepted. Mental health is taken far more seriously nowadays and the idea of it being a joke is unacceptable.
