In the years since NBC’s Friends went off the air, the show hasn’t really decreased in popularity at all. In fact, with the series hitting Netflix, Friends has been opened up to a whole new audience. Everyone, not just those weirdos who use physical media like DVDs still, can have the series on loop 24/7. With the passage of time, though, there are certain disturbing things about Friends that have popped up. One of the big ones is that Monica and Ross are entirely too close for a brother and sister.

This isn’t just that Ross and Monica are a little too touchy feely for two siblings (though they are in fact a little too touch-feely for two siblings). It’s that there are more than a few moments where Friends seems to completely forget the two are brother and sister, and this leads to some sexually awkward moments.

Decades before Game of Thrones made it cool, Monica and Ross were very close to buying two one-way tickets to Incest Town one several occasions. Whether it’s because there was so much hooking up going on in the group already or the writers just forgot that Monica was Ross’ sister and not just Phoebe and Rachel’s best friend, things between the Gellar siblings get very weird, very often.

16 Everything About the Gellar Bowl on Thanksgiving

One of Friends’ best Thanksgiving episodes, “The One With All the Football” could be seen as the ultimate example of Monica and Ross engaging in typical sibling rivalry. There’s nothing strange about Monica and Ross playing football as children and wanting to revive their classic backyard brawls as adults. The idea itself is fine, but the actions of the Gellar Bowl Game do get slightly disturbing when looked at with a closer eye.

Monica and Ross are definitely fighting during the Thanksgiving Day rematch, but there’s also a very flirty nature to their bickering. The mood between Monica and Ross during the Gellar Bowl is really no different than Rachel and Ross arguing. Then there’s the fact Monica comes up with the plan to use the girls’ sex appeal to distract the boys and win the game. Granted, Phoebe is the only one who flashes her boobs, but it’s still weird that it’s Monica’s idea. Ross also takes Monica’s pants off at one point to distract her. To top it all off, Ross does a weird humping dance on Monica’s leg when he thinks his team is about to win.

The more you think about it, the more it seems the two decided to play football just to grope/tackle each in a “socially acceptable” way.

15 Monica Openly Talked about Her Diaphragm in Front of Ross

This is another classic sibling rivalry moment that has creepy undertones. Shortly after Rachel and Ross started dating, Monica got annoyed by how much time her brother was spending in her apartment. This all culminates in Ross handing the phone to Monica, after hogging it for awhile, telling his sister that her boyfriend, Richard, is on the phone. Monica immediately launches into asking about her diaphragm, only to be horrified to learn that Ross has lied and their mother is really on the line.

It’s hard to feel that sorry for Monica in the moment. She may not have known she was talking to her mother, but regardless of who was on the other end, Ross is still very much in the room. Monica is completely fine about talking about her birth control in front of her brother, but her mother crosses a creepy line for her? Okay…

14 Ross Ogled Monica’s Legs

In the infamous episode “The One With Ross’s Tan” Ross gets turned on to a new spray tan place thanks to Monica. But the episode opens with Ross seemingly getting turned on, sexually, by Monica. When Monica walks into Central Perk, Ross spends an inappropriate amount of time staring at her legs. It goes on so long that Chandler is forced to call him out on it. First for checking out another man’s wife, and then for checking out his own sister.

Ross covers by explaining he was merely admiring Monica’s tan. Everyone just sort of accepts that excuse, but this shouldn’t fly. Admiring your sister’s tan is just as weird as admiring your sister’s gams. It’s not normal that any brother should look at his sister skin and think, “Yeah, she is looking damn good today.” No matter how much Ross apparently wanted a good tan, this is a pretty gross way to express it.

13 Monica Was Willing to Have Sex with Ross Around

When Monica and Chandler were trying to have a baby, she approached the situation as she would any other challenge. She was determined to get knocked up, and wouldn’t let anyone or anything stand in her way. This leads to the moment in “The One Where Rachel Goes Back to Work” where Monica marches into her apartment where Chandler and Ross are present and tells Chandler to take off his pants.

Sure, Monica didn’t see Ross when she was walking into the apartment. Yet once she discovers her older brother, Monica is not even slightly embarrassed. In fact, she even tells him that she’s having sex with Chandler whether Ross stays or goes. Ew. Ross even has newborn daughter Emma with him. Double ew.

We get it, Monica. You’re driven, competitive, and every other aggressive adjective. There’s nothing wrong with it. There is something wrong with you being willing to have sex with your husband while your brother sits (with his infant daughter) entirely too close by.

12 Monica Knows Exactly When Ross Lost His Virginity

In the early days of Friends, the exact history of the group was a little undefined. It wasn’t until a few years in when it was established that Ross and Chandler were college roommates, and that he wasn’t just Monica’s brother. Before that bit of exposition was brought up, it was down to Monica to explain most of Ross’ backstory. This leads to a very weird moment in “The One with George Stephanopoulos”, where Monica knows that Ross lost his virginity to Carol on October 20th, because he’s depressed that day.

Any character but Ross knowing the exact anniversary of getting his V-Card swiped is strange. It would at least make sense if Chandler knew though as he was likely Ross’ roommate around that time. Monica not only knowing when Ross had first had sex with Carol, but keeping that information in her memory for years, is just downright creepy.

11 They Always Sat in Each Others Laps

This is more a collective instance than a singular moment. Yet there is something very off-putting about the amount of physical touching that goes on between Monica and Ross on Friends. A lot of the core six do cuddle or share the same chair a lot. Chandler and Monica were sitting on each other laps years before the London trip. Joey cuddled with plenty of his friends too, including Ross. It never felt romantic or sexually charged, but when Monica and Ross did it, it was always odd.

Monica and Ross are way too comfortable with each other. No brother should stroke their sister’s arm as much as Ross. No sister should feel so at home in her brother’s lap. There is one moment of public intimacy in particular that is inscrutably weird.

When Phoebe gave birth to her triplets, all of her friends gathered in the delivery room at the end of the episode. Given the limited amount of seating available, someone had to group up. Rather than sit on Chandler’s lap, whom she was dating at the time, Monica is planted way too comfortably on her brother. Ross’ arm is wrapped around Monica’s waist, his hand is resting on her inner thigh. Nothing about it is okay. Stop it Gellars! Stop it!

10 They Played Strip Happy Days Game Together

Monica and Ross are banking on Joey’s lack of knowledge on a ’70s sitcoms set in the ’50s so they don’t have to show their bathing suit areas to each other. It’s a safe gamble. Joey doesn’t know much about anything besides sandwiches, it seems. Still, it’s a risk that no siblings should be willing to take.

Strip poker is all about the titillation of someone maybe taking their clothes. Strip Happy Days game obviously follows the same rules. The chance that Monica and Ross were getting excited about the possibility of one of them taking off their shirts off because they didn’t know the Fonz’s catchphrase is too disturbing to imagine.

9 They Wrestled in Front of Rachel To Prove It Wasn’t Weird

After five seasons of Monica and Ross straddling the line of incest, Friends went all-out in introducing a real disturbing brother and sister duo. In “The One with The Inappropriate Sister”, Rachel’s miserable relationship with Danny came to end when she was rightfully creeped out by Danny’s bone-chilling relationship with his sister. Before Rachel decided to give up on Danny (but after she had watched him get into a tickling/wrestling match with his sister), she went to Monica and Ross for advice.

The second creepiest siblings in the episode told Rachel that is was incredibly disturbing for two grown siblings to wrestle … only to proceed to wrestle in the weirdest way possible. Like most things with the Gellars, the way that Monica and Ross wrestle is unlike all other human behavior. It’s found somewhere around the intersection of an arm wrestle, a hug, and a headbutt, and it’s another moment of Monica and Ross’ competitiveness turning into outright creepiness.

8 Monica Listened to Ross Hook Up with Charlie

The season 9 finale featuring Ross finally kissing Joey’s girlfriend, Charlie, and Joey hooking up with Rachel was the lamest cliffhanger in Friends’ history. No one cared about either relationship getting off the ground. It’s strange enough then that the remaining members of the group got so invested in hearing the two couples put their tongues down each other throats. But it’s downright frightening how excited Monica was to hear Charlie and Ross suck face.

Monica loves gossip and relationship drama, especially after she got married to Chandler. Yet nowhere in Monica’s excitement to hear two new couples being formed does she stop to think about the fact that one of them involves her brother. Phoebe even feels that they are invading on their privacy by listening through walls, but Monica is worried that she can’t hear “everything.”

The depraved cherry on top of the creepy sundae is that later on, Monica is the only one listening to Charlie and Ross. Chandler and Phoebe keep listening to Rachel and Joey on one wall while Monica is all alone. Everyone fails here, but the youngest Gellar sibling fails the hardest.

7 Ross Watched Monica and Chandler Hook Up … For a Long Time

In the aptly titled “The One Where Everyone Finds Out,” the gang discovers that Monica and Chandler have been secretly dating since London. Most of the episode involves Phoebe and Rachel trying to convince Chandler and Monica to come clean. At the very end of the episode, Ross discovers the romance as well, albeit in a less than ideal way. Through the window, Ross spots (but then watches) his best friend initiate and start to have sex with his little sister, and the scene lasts roughly 30 seconds.

The appropriate reaction to seeing your sister start to get it on with someone is to look away or be downright disturbed. You don’t watch it, ever. But Ross watches the whole thing go down and just gets angrier and angrier, until he’s so upset that he runs across the street to confront them.

There are so many questions to be asked here, the most pressing of which is why Ross continued to watch for as long as he did. It doesn’t take that much time to confirm it, Ross. You know what sex looks like by now. Monica knows the exact date and year that you found out what sex looked like, too.

6 Monica and Rachel Shared Condoms … While Rachel Was Dating Ross

In “The One Where Dr. Ramoray Dies”, Ross and Rachel start getting in the mood at the exact same time as Monica and Richard. This leads to Rachel and Monica having to battle it out for the last condom in their joint stash. Let’s set aside the fact that Rachel and Monica can afford their magnificent apartment but not their own condoms for a moment. Nowhere in the condom battle does anyone think about the fact that regardless of the outcome, one Gellar sibling is likely going to have to listen to the other get all carnal with someone. Ross and Richard even come out of their respective bedrooms at point and shrug at each other as if to say, “Women, right?” It’s a fine reaction if Ross and Richard are just friends or casual acquaintances, it’s a whole other matter when they’re potential brother-in-laws.

There should be no bigger mood killer than seeing your sister’s boyfriend in his underwear. Yet when Rachel wins the condom, Ross immediately heads into the bedroom to have loud “animal sex” — with his sister well within earshot.

5 Monica Wanted to See Rachel and Ross’ Sex Tape

Upon learning that your brother has a sex tape, even if it is accidental one, the right reaction is to burn all physical copies and scatter them to the wind. Monica would disgree with this fundamental truth, unfortunately. When asked by Rachel if she wants to see the tape of Ross and her having sex, Monica responds, “Hell yeah!”

In Monica’s defense, the reason that she (and everyone else) wants to see the tape is to prove who came on to whom between Rachel and Ross. Phoebe explains that they don’t want to see the sex part, but just the foreplay before it, in order to determine how Rachel got pregnant. Yet before Monica even knew about the tape, she wanted to know when Rachel and Ross had sex, how it happened, and how many times it happened. These are reasonable questions to ask your best friend about how she got pregnant. They are frightening ones to ask when your brother is involved.

Going back to Phoebe’s desire to just see the foreplay doesn’t make it okay. Even if that is all Monica wants to see to prove a point, surely having her friends watch it will be enough for her. She shouldn’t be so incredibly jazzed to see her brother’s “moves.”

4 Monica Got WAY Too Into Rachel’s First Kiss with Ross

The cold open of the episode after the one where Rachel and Ross kiss for the first time, “The One With The List”, is one of Friends’ better jokes about the difference between the sexes. Monica and Phoebe want all the romantic details about Rachel and Ross’ kiss. Chandler and Joey just want to know if there was tongue involved.

It’s an clever and funny way to approach how men and women feel about romance. If you just look at Monica’s reactions, though, the scene could be viewed as a sister vicariously living out her sexual fantasies about her brother through her best friend. When hearing about how Ross kissed Rachel, Monica moans and closes her eyes in pleasure. The image that accompanies this entry is not edited in any way. It is Monica’s literal reaction to hearing how Ross kisses women.

In a later scene from the series, Monica explains the erogenous zones to Chandler and how to best take advantage of them. Monica gets very carried away imagining a scenario with a fictional man and basically acts out an entire orgasm. Monica’s reactions to Ross’ kiss are more sexual than that moment.

3 The Routine

When given the chance to appear on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, Monica and Ross pull out a memory from their childhood by performing a dance that they call “The Routine”, which makes for one of Friends’ best visual gags ever.

Monica and Ross’ infamous dance routine can be seen as the pinnacle of their goofy and nerdy natures. The Routine is truly ridiculous, sure, but there is a very weird and intense energy between Monica and Ross during it. There is a reason that The Routine has been performed by countless Friends fans at their weddings and it feels perfectly normal.

The jump and hold, the way the two straddle each other and dance into each other’s arms, none of this is normal brother and sister behavior. In fact, aggressive dancing with your sibling at all once puberty kicks in is just icky.

2 Ross Was Monica’s Midnight Mystery Kisser

There should have been no doubt in any Friends fan’s mind for what was going to top this list. The creepiest moment between Ross and Monica, by far, happens way before the series even begins: they made out back in college.

It is revealed in one of the last episodes of the show, “The One Where the Stripper Cries”, that years before, Ross and Monica had accidentally made out with each other. Monica and Rachel went to go visit Chandler and Ross at school, and at midnight, Ross went back to his room and ended up kissing someone whom he believed was Rachel in the pitch black of the room. But the girl in question was, in fact, Monica. Neither Gellar knows they made out with each other due to the darkness, and Monica had called the man who was Ross her “midnight mystery kisser.” But the lack of proper lighting is no excuse for outright incest.

The kiss occurs not only when Rachel had her old nose, but when Monica went by the nickname Big Fat Goalie. There is no amount of alcohol or darkness that can reasonably lead Ross to mistake Rachel’s face for Monica’s lips. Suddenly, Monica’s reaction to Ross kissing Rachel makes much so more sense.

1 Bonus: Ross Tried to Kiss His Cousin

The biggest reason that Ross and Monica’s kiss probably wasn’t an accident is because the former has a history of wanting to make out with relatives. In the bizarre episode “The One With Ross and Monica’s Cousin”, the eponymous relative, Cassie (played by Denise Richards), comes to visit. Ross is immediately attracted to Cassie despite being very closely related to her, because Cassie evidently looked quite dorky as a child. Let’s not even get into that as a reason to be attracted to someone.

When Ross and Cassie are left alone at the end of the episode, Ross is tormented by sexual thoughts. Ross has an ongoing internal monologue about whether he should make a move on his blood relative. Ross does eventually go for the kiss, much to Cassie (and everyone else’s) horror. Ross Gellar is a monster and he needs to be stopped.

Thankfully, Monica does sit in judgement of Ross for trying to get it on with their cousin. As this list has established, though, Monica’s high horse can’t be all that tall when it comes to this matter. Frankly, she might have been jealous.
