Friends 5 Times Joey Was Chandlers Best Friend (& 5 It Was Ross)

For fans of Friends, and for the characters themselves, there is a constant debate: who is Chandler Bing’s best friend? Is it Joey Tribbiani, his roommate? Or is it Ross Geller, his college pal? The two of them go back and forth all the time, forgetting — of course — that a man can have two best friends, and Chandler absolutely does.

From season to season, both Joey and Ross prove that they hold a special place in Chandler’s heart, and that he holds a special place in theirs in return. These two men love Chandler more than anything and just want to see him happy.

10 Joey: Bracelet Buddies

Who can forget the infamous bracelets that Joey gets for Chandler? In season two, the episode “The One With the Prom Video” is best remembered for the titular prom video. However, in the episode’s b-plot, Joey finally makes enough money to thank Chandler for all the head-shots and food he’s paid for over the years. When Joey gives Chandler a tacky gold friendship bracelet, he thinks he loves it, only to later overhear Chandler mocking the bracelet. Chandler later loses the bracelet, but gis friendship with Joey means so much to him that he gets a matching bracelet, and the two of them have matching friendship bracelets now!

9 Ross: Way, No Way

The Flock of Seagulls haircuts that Chandler and Ross rock back in college are hilarious, but they were inspired by the band in more ways than one: they have a band, too. Their band, called Way, No Way, is mentioned in the season ten episode “The One Where the Stripper Cries,” in a flashback.

True fans of Friends may remember Way, No Way for such hit songs as “Emotional Knapsack,” “She Feels Weird Since I’ve Been Gone,” and “Betrayal in the Common Room.” That kind of emotional vulnerability can only truly come between two best friends.

8 Joey: The Chick And The Duck

In all fairness to Ross, it’s difficult to come between co-parents when they’re so involved in their children’s lives. Joey and Chandler are absolutely co-parenting The Chick and The Duck, the roommates’ “pets” (sort of?) while they were living together. They adopt The Chick and The Duck in season three, much to Phoebe’s concern, but it turns out she doesn’t need to worry. The Chick and The Duck are well-loved and well-taken care of by Chandler and Joey.

7 Ross: Thanksgiving

When Chandler has nowhere to go for Thanksgiving in college, Ross invites Chandler to come back and celebrate Thanksgiving with his family instead. Now, Chandler and Ross make it clear to Ross’ parents that Chandler hates Thanksgiving and doesn’t eat any Thanksgiving food; even though Jack and Judy judge him for it, Ross sticks up for him. He’s even invited back for multiple Thanksgivings throughout college, as we can see this Thanksgiving and a later one in the season five episode “The One With All The Thanksgivings.”

6 Joey: The Officiant

When Chandler and Monica are getting married, who does Chandler turn to? Is it his supposed best friend and college roommate Ross — also the brother of his wife? No! He turns to his best friend Joey, who almost doesn’t make it in time. The entire episode, entitled “The One with Monica and Chandler’s Wedding,” Joey is trying his best to rush through a scene with Gary Oldman. He’s not even worried about the risk to his career, in the end; he rushes to the wedding and makes it just as the ceremony begins, still in costume. That’s true friendship.

5 Ross: The Vermont Vacation

In a later inclusion to the series, the season nine episode “The One With Rachel’s Dream” has a full-episode Ross-Chandler match-up. When Monica tells Chandler she can’t go with him on a surprise (and nonrefundable) trip he’s booked for the two of them to Vermont, Chandler instead decides to take his brother-in-law, Ross.

Because the hotel wouldn’t let Chandler get a refund, but still doesn’t have his booking for him when he shows, Ross helps Chandler take revenge on them by stealing all their toiletries.

4 Joey: True Support

Without Chandler, Joey wouldn’t be able to be the successful actor he becomes by the end of the series. In those early days, Chandler pays for— Well, everything, it seems. He loans Joey money often, pays their rent when Joey can’t, and pays for Joey’s headshots and food when he’s struggling. As soon as Joey starts making money of his own, he gets Chandler the aforementioned bracelets; whenever he gets the chance to show how much Chandler’s generosity and support mean to him, he takes it.

3 Ross: Recreating The Wedding

Chandler makes a big mistake in the season eight episode “The One With The Red Sweater.” Though arguably not as big as the mistake Ross is revealed to have made in that episode, Chandler thinks he’s lost all the disposable cameras from his and Monica’s wedding.

Devastated, he turns to Ross, who suggests they dress up in their tuxes and crash the wedding happening in the same venue that night. Ross even helps Chandler take a photo of him kissing the bride. He’s married to his sister. That is true friendship.

2 Joey: The Movie Premiere

Friends 5 Times Joey Was Chandlers Best Friend (& 5 It Was Ross)

Joey doesn’t just get Chandler the gold best-friendship bracelets once he makes it big. No, Joey consistently shows Chandler how much he means to him, and one of the biggest ways comes in the season eight episode “The One Where Rachel Is Late.” Though most of the episode is focused on the fact that Rachel’s due date has come and gone, the b-plot features Joey having only one extra ticket to accompany him to his first movie premiere. Instead of taking any number of hot options offered up by his female friends, he chooses instead to take Chandler as a way of thanking him for his support over the years.

1 Ross: Santa Claus

Friends 5 Times Joey Was Chandlers Best Friend (& 5 It Was Ross)

Despite the fact that Ross is Jewish, his ex-wife, Carol, is not, and so his son, Ben, is raised celebrating both Christmas and (eventually) Hanukkah. Ben is devastated when he finds out in the season seven episode “The One With The Holiday Armadillo” that Santa might not come that year. Ross, in an attempt to fix his comedy of errors, wants to reassure Ben that that’s not the case, but he can’t get a hold of a Santa suit. He ends up instead becoming the Holiday Armadillo and teaches Ben about Hanukkah — except that Chandler shows up dressed as Santa to try and help Ross. In the end, he helps by telling Ben he, too, wants to learn about Hanukkah from the Holiday Armadillo. Ross and Chandler share a tender moment together before teaching Ben more about Hanukkah.
