The Friends gang have some intense characteristics- but which would help them in the Squid Game, and who would come out on top?

The undisputedly most-watched series of 2021 is Squid Game. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show centers around a deathly contest that sees 456 debt-ridden contestants compete in children’s games for a massive cash prize. Released on Netflix in mid-September, the show quickly garnered worldwide notoriety, leading to many attempting the tasks themselves.

The interactivity of the viewing experience prompts a discussion of how some of the most popular characters in television would fare in the Squid Game. When considering how the main characters in Friends have such distinct and sometimes intense personality traits, it is fairly straightforward to determine which member of the main six would win the contest overall.

6 Chandler Bing

As the joker of the group, Chandler rarely takes anything seriously, using any and every opportunity to make jokes or just act immaturely. This immaturity is arguably one of Chandler’s worst traits in Friends, as it prevents him from giving certain situations the serious attention that they deserve.

It is fair to assume that Chandler would absolutely not make it far in the Squid Game, potentially being knocked out of the competition in the first “Red Light, Green Light” round as he would be too busy crafting jokes about the leader, or just the game in general. In fact, when considering Chandler’s well-documented lack of physicality (he is called “a dropper” by Monica, after all), it is likely that he would barely make it past the simple task of the “Recruiting Game.”

5 Rachel Green

It may be unfair to rank Rachel as the second-to-least likely to win the Squid Game. It is revealed in a hilarious season 6 episode, “The One Where Phoebe Runs”, that Rachel in fact enjoys running, and has no issue stopping dead in her tracks when determined to prove she has no idea who Phoebe is when she runs strangely.

While this aspect of her character would suggest her ability to make it past the first round, “Red Light, Green Light,” the likelihood of her surviving the second round, “Sugar Honeycombs,” is far lower. Not only is Rachel notoriously terrible with food (she made the infamous meat-based trifle), but she also displays a distinct lack of patience multiple times in the series, most notably during her pregnancy when she is visibly tired of Ross’s antics.

4 Ross Geller

A character in the series who is defined by his smarts is Ross Geller, who is arguably more intelligent than everyone else in Friends. Ross’s smarts suggest his ability t0 survive the first couple rounds of the Squid Game, particularly “Red Light, Green Light” and “Sugar Honeycombs” as he would follow the rules exactly, and come out on top.

In the third round of the Squid Game though, “Tug of War,” Ross would most likely begin to falter. In “The One With Phoebe’s Birthday Dinner,” after Ross and Rachel are locked out of their apartment with Emma trapped inside, Rachel asks Ross to knock the door down, to which he replies “I would but I bruise like a peach.” This quote is all that is required to establish Ross as a character who tries to avoid strenuous activity, which would be his downfall in the “Tug of War.”

3 Joey Tribbiani

The group’s most dimwitted but lovable member, Joey Tribbiani, would no doubt be an excellent contender in the Squid Game, particularly due to his physical strength. Joey would make light work of the first round due to his experience following instructions as an actor. Furthermore, his serious attitude about food would provide him with the care and attention required for the second round.

After likely winning the “Tug of War” due to his obvious physical strength that is displayed throughout the series, Joey would stumble in the Squid Game’s fourth round, “Marbles,” as it is a round that is purely focused on intellect and outsmarting your opponent. Joey’s evident existence as a member of the group who is not as smart as the rest would potentially be taken advantage of, as others would jump at the chance to partner up with him so that they can survive the round.

2 Monica Geller

Displaying an intense attitude when it comes to her playing any competitive sport, Monica Geller is a character that would outlast most of her friends in the Squid Game simply due to her determination to win. She would fly through the first round due to her concentration, survive the second as she is a professional chef, and the ‘Tug of War” round thanks to her strength (she held her own against Chandler in an arm wrestle).

Her cunning attitude would allow her to fly through the “Marbles” round, as she is known to do anything she can to win, regardless of consequence. However, one of Monica’s most relatable character traits in Friends is her tendency to be overly prepared and planned for almost any situation. In the fifth round of the Squid Game, “Hopscotch,” players must avoid plummeting to their death by stepping on the wrong pane of glass, while they are timed. Monica’s affinity for planning would likely lead to her running out of time to complete the task.

1 Phoebe Buffay

As the most unpredictable member of the six friends, and subsequently the most dangerous, Phoebe Buffay would be the undisputed champion of the Squid Game. Phoebe would survive the first round due to her confidence in her ability to succeed and would win the “Sugar Honeycombs” round as she is skilled in intricate work (like playing the guitar). Her intense personality, almost akin to bloodlust, would allow her to sail through the following rounds. She would put all her might into the “Tug of War,” and Phoebe would use her worst trait, her ability to manipulate, to win the “Marbles” round.

For the fifth round, “Hopscotch” it could be concluded that Phoebe’s determination would cause her to pay the utmost attention to which panes of glass are fragile. For the final round, the “Squid Game” itself, an amalgamation of Phoebe’s best and worst characteristics would help her win. From drawing on her tough upbringing to remain calm in the deathly situation, or her ability to not shy away from using devious tactics to knock out other players, it is believable that Phoebe would be the last woman standing in the Squid Game, taking home the top prize and outranking every single one of her friends.
