Friends Why Two Of Joeys Sisters Were Recast

Friends introduced viewers to the families of the main characters, but Joey’s went through a couple of changes, as two of his many sisters were recast. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, Friends debuted on NBC in 1994 and came to an end 10 years later after 10 successful seasons that made TV history. To this day, Friends is regarded as one of the best TV shows ever made, and its fanbase keeps growing thanks to the streaming era.

Friends followed a group of six close friends living in New York City and trying to survive adulthood as best as they could, balancing their social, personal, and professional lives. Over the course of 10 seasons, viewers got to meet the families of Phoebe, Chandler, Monica, Joey, Rachel, and Ross, each with their own complicated history. Perhaps the one with the most stable family background was Joey, who grew up with both his parents and seven sisters. All the Tribbiani girls appeared together in one episode, and two went on to have bigger roles in Joey’s life.

They all had minor roles the first time they appeared in Friends, and most of them didn’t even talk, so it’s easy to miss that two of the Tribbiani sisters were recast when their roles were expanded later on in the series and in Joey’s spin-off, Joey.

Friends: Why Gina and Dina Tribbiani Were Recast

The Tribbiani sisters – Mary Therese (reworked as Mary Teresa in Joey), Mary Angela, Dina, Gina, Tina, Veronica, and Cookie – first appeared in season 3’s episode “The One Where Chandler Can’t Remember Which Sister”, where Chandler fooled around with one of them (Mary Angela) after getting drunk at Joey’s birthday party. When he went to talk to her, he ended up in the presence of all the sisters and was unable to identify Mary Angela. After mistakenly kissing Mary Therese, Joey let his sister Cookie punch Chandler. Gina and Dina came back after that episode, but they looked very different.

Dina was originally played by Lisa Melilli, and when she re-appeared in season 8’s episode “The One With Monica’s Boots”, she was played by Marla Sokoloff. In that episode, she asked for Rachel’s help as she was pregnant and didn’t know how to tell Joey. Melilli had small roles in other shows, such as Married… with Children and Melrose Place, and retired from the entertainment business in 1997 – Dina returned in 2001, so the production crew had to find another actress to play the part.

Gina Tribbiani, on the other hand, came back in Joey, where she moved to Los Angeles and lived with her brother alongside her teenage son, Michael. Gina was originally played by K.J. Steinberg and was replaced by Drea De Matteo in Joey. After Friends, Steinberg appeared in short-films before turning her attention to TV production in the mid-2000s, and has worked in shows like Gossip Girl and This Is Us. It’s unknown why she didn’t reprise her role in Joey, but it most likely has to do with scheduling conflicts – or, simply, the producers were looking for an actress with a different style that matched their vision.
