It’s been a decade since the original so is Charlie Wax ever returning for From Paris With Love 2? The success of the original Taken took everyone who made it by surprise, with star Liam Neeson later admitting he thought it would end up going straight to DVD. Director Pierre Morel immediately opted out of Taken 2, however, since it would basically be the same story again. While Morel was attached to big projects in the years that followed like Dune, most of his work would land in the action/revenge genre, including movies like Sean Penn vehicle The Gunman or Peppermint with Jennifer Garner.

Morel’s immediate follow-up to Taken was 2010’s From Paris With Love, starring John Travolta (The Fanatic) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. This mismatched buddy comedy saw Travolta’s violent, unconventional secret agent arrive in Paris to investigate a possible terrorist attack, while Meyers’ CIA recruit has to guide him around the city. While it was seemingly aiming for the tone of an 1980s action movie, Meyers’ performance is too intense and brooding to mesh with Travolta’s intentionally hammy turn, making for a buddy comedy that never gels. While it featured some good action sequences the film’s humor was often too mean-spirited to enjoy too.

There was mention of a possible From Paris With Love 2 during the promotional rounds for the film, so is a follow-up still possible?

During an interview with NJ.com, John Travolta admitted that while he wasn’t usually big on sequels, he would love to return as Wax for From Paris With Love 2. He threw out possible titles like From London With Love or From Prague With Love, suggesting a franchise where John Travolta has wacky adventures around the globe.

From Paris With Love was met with a lukewarm response from critics and audiences, taking in a worldwide theatrical gross of $52 million. Home video sales pushed that number up another $20 million, but taking the film’s marketing and other costs into account, it probably didn’t break even.

Given the original film’s underperformance and the time that’s passed, From Paris With Love 2 is extremely unlikely to happen now. The film hasn’t amassed much of a fanbase in the years since to demand one either, and while a reboot or TV spinoff might be possible, there are no signs of the franchise continuing in any form, so John Travolta’s Charlie Wax is unlikely to return.
