Frozen 3 Will Reveal Annas Fire Powers Theory Explained

Frozen 2 revealed that Elsa and Anna make up two sides of the bridge between nature and humanity, representing a balance – so if Elsa is ice, Frozen 3 could show Anna become her opposite: fire. Though a third installment hasn’t been confirmed by Disney, the record-breaking success of the first two films means it is likely. The end of the second film showed Elsa abdicate the throne in favor of becoming a full-fledged nature spirit, but Anna’s role as the other half of the Fifth Spirit is never fully explained. Frozen 3 is a great opportunity for Anna to explore her newfound identity and discover powers of her own.

In Frozen 2, Elsa and Anna journey to the Enchanted Forest after Elsa hears a voice calling out to her. They encounter the Northuldra, a tribe with a special connection to the magic of nature, who have been trapped in the forest for many years. Here, the sisters discover that their mother was a member of the Northuldra, and Elsa’s powers are a gift from the nature spirits after she saved their father’s life even though their people were enemies. Elsa also learns that she is the fifth spirit, gaining control over the elements of air, water, earth, and fire, and connecting them to the human world, similar to Avatar Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Anna is half of the Fifth Spirit, and since she has always been shown as the perfect counterpart to her ice-wielding sister, it is possible that she might possess untapped fire powers. Even though Disney has established that Elsa is the magical one out of the two sisters, theories about Anna’s potential powers have circulated since the release of the first film. Frozen 2 revealed that Elsa’s powers come from their mother, but also that her bond with Anna is what connects the four elemental spirits to the human world, bringing a balance to nature. As Elsa states at the end of the movie, “a bridge has two sides, and mother had two daughters.” While this could mean that Elsa is the magical side and Anna is the human side, the vague explanation for Anna’s role leaves room for other possibilities.

Anna is always presented as the opposite of Elsa, representing warmth and summer the same way Elsa represents winter. If Elsa’s reserved and cold personality reflects her ice powers, Anna’s feisty and temperamental nature could reflect fire. In Frozen, the sisters’ differences kept them from understanding one another, but in the end, the strong bond between them that saves Arendelle from an eternal winter. In terms of character design, Elsa’s white hair, and color scheme of blues, whites, and purples keeps with the theme of winter. Anna, on the other hand, has hair the color of fire, and is shown in shades of green, implying spring and summer. Interestingly, Jennifer Lee once mentioned on Twitter that Elsa was born on the winter solstice, while Anna was born on the summer solstice.

Since Frozen 2 has Bruni as the spirit of fire, it may seem unnecessary for Anna to have the same ability. But Elsa controls ice even though The Nokk already represents the element of water, so it’s possible that her powers could have to do with her role as one-half of the bridge. Since the Fifth Spirit brings balance to nature, and the opposite of ice and water is fire, it makes sense that Anna’s complementary power is fire. An explanation for why it took so long for Anna’s powers to manifest in Frozen 3 can refer to the opening scene in Frozen. When Grand Pabbie healed a young Anna, he stated “I recommend we remove all magic, even memories of magic.” One interpretation is that rather than it just being about the injury that Elsa caused, there was magic inherent in Anna that the troll temporarily took away.

If Anna has fire magic in Frozen 3, the film could show her grapple with the destruction of her returning abilities, setting off a heatwave or an eternal summer, mirroring Elsa’s struggle in the first film. Of course, it’s as likely that Elsa, being the firstborn, was the only child of Queen Iduna gifted with magic. Even if Anna was born without magic as the second child, it is interesting to see how a third Frozen film further explore the Frozen 2 concept of her identity as half of the Fifth Spirit.
