Full House is widely considered one of the best 1980s and early 90s family-friendly sitcoms, with a spot on ABC’s popular TGIF prime time lineup. The show focused on Danny Tanner, a widower forced to raise his three children who gets some unexpected help from friends and family members.

Known for its squeaky-clean image and wholesome family values, Full House was as heartwarming as it was inspirational. Audiences didn’t take too kindly to every character on the show, however. Either by design or accident, there were some who fans couldn’t stand, while others became instant favorites.

10 Disliked: Danny Tanner

Poor Danny Tanner never had it easy. Not only was he a single dad raising several children, but he was severely out of touch with everything it meant to be cool. He was typically overbearing and protective in a way that every kid hated, and this made him less favorable to audiences, which was actually the entire point.

By playing on the embarrassing dad stereotype, Danny managed to generate a lot of laughs while irritating viewers with his slightly neurotic personality. However, to say that he was a loving father would be the understatement of the century.

9 Liked: DJ Tanner

DJ represented her target audience well. She spoke to teenagers at a time when they were going through serious complications in their quest to grow up and make something of themselves. As such, she turned out to be a major linchpin of the cast.

She was also fiercely protective of her younger sisters, and would frequently intervene to make sure they weren’t pursuing any dangerous paths. This led to her clashing a lot with Stephanie, who viewed her as too overbearing, though the two would always seem to work it out and bounce back stronger than before.

8 Disliked: Joey Gladstone

Joey’s unique brand of comedy was hit or miss, to say the least. Though some fans loved the character, many found his impersonations and gags a bit too corny and tedious to sit through. Joey seemed to work best when he was attempting to be dramatic, which was usually more comical than his zany antics.

That was also the point of the character. Joey Gladstone was the oddball and the man who would either throw the best party or end up crashing it to the ground. Unfortunately, his offbeat humor didn’t win him many favors with fans over the age of 10.

7 Liked: Jessie Katsopolis

In contrast to Joey, Jessie Katsopolis was the cool uncle that every kid hoped to have. He was young and rebellious, with a wild spirit and a rock n’ roll lifestyle to match it. When he wasn’t cruising around on a motorcycle, he was picking up a six-string to write his newest song.

Although Jessie was supposed to be the bad boy uncle that clashed with the uncool father, he turned out to be a solid influence on the lives of Danny’s kids. His devotion to family was paramount, and his experience living under the Tanner roof would turn him into a responsible young man.

6 Disliked: Stephanie Tanner

Stephanie Tanner was designed from the ground up to be annoying. She symbolized a child’s natural inclination to rebel, especially as the series progressed and her character entered her early teen years. As such, Stephanie was overly melodramatic, bratty, and at times, cruel.

Though she had a good heart, her annoying-on-purpose design turned her into a cringey character that audiences either hated or loved to hate. Still, she was every bit as lovable as the rest of the cast, and audiences knew it.

5 Liked: Michelle Tanner

It’s hard not to adore Michelle, considering that audiences literally watched her group up before their very eyes. As the youngest of the Tanner children, she had no real memory of her deceased mother, which made her one of the most isolated members of the family.

This played out in several episodes showing Michelle’s fear of abandonment, as well as issues with self-confidence. Her vulnerable state made her sympathetic to audiences, who were delighted to see that she was in the company of such loving and positive role models.

4 Disliked: Kimmy Gibbler

Kimmy Gibbler was the original Steve Urkel, at least in terms of personality quirks. She was a dim light bulb amidst a cast of brilliant people, and the writers played on this fact by turning her into a gag machine. Kimmy was odd, irresponsible and off-putting – all the classic traits of a good court jester.

As the series progressed, it was made obvious that Kimmy’s relationship with the Tanners helped steer her away from personal ruin. She would end up returning to the follow-up series Fuller House as a regular cast member.

3 Liked: Rebecca Donaldson

Rebecca was an excellent counterpart to Jessie, and she ended up becoming an integral member of the family, with a close bond with the girls. She was able to tame the bad boy Jessie without fundamentally changing his wild nature, and the two quickly became inseparable.

She was also something of a local celebrity, thanks to her stint as co-host of Wake Up, San Francisco, alongside Danny Tanner. In many ways, Rebecca filled the motherhood role left vacant by Danny’s deceased wife Pam, and the entire household became better off for it.

2 Disliked: Gia Mahan

Gia was every parent’s worst nightmare, and she proved it multiple times throughout the show. She was rebellious in a manner that far exceeded other characters on the show. She would smoke cigarettes, flunk her classes and engage in risky, unwise behavior at the drop of a hat.

Her repeated flaunting of responsibility would come back to bite her when she agreed to a joy ride with two boys before getting into a major car accident. In the end, Gia would end up benefiting from Stephanie’s friendship and kindness, but audiences saw her as a snake in the grass with bad intentions.

1 Liked: Steve Hale

Steve didn’t show up until season five, but he was well-liked almost from the start. Far from the cruel jock stereotype portrayed in many TV shows, Steve was kind, thoughtful and valiant, if not a little dimwitted. Unfortunately, the fact was lost on Danny Tanner, who viewed him as every father’s worst nightmare come true.

Eventually, Steve would settle in as a series regular, who also made a comeback in Fuller House. His non-threatening boy next door persona made him likable for audiences who were glad to see D.J. grow up and get a boyfriend worthy of her traits.
